Who to include in reserved seating area for cermony?

Our wedding planner asked me last night who we want included in the reserved seating area at the church. Obviously our immediate family, grandmothers, reader, etc but does this normally inclue aunts and uncles as well?

What did you do?

Re: Who to include in reserved seating area for cermony?

  • we kept the front pew open on each side - his side for his parents and sister, and sister in law, and my side for my mom who sat with her brothers and their wives.
everyone else was on their own.
  • On FI's side we'll just reserve the first row for his parents, grandmother, and the reader.  On my side, we'll probably reserve the first two rows, as I have more grandparents coming and OOT guests.

You can do whatever you want, but if it ends up being half the guest list in reserved seating, you might want to keep it to parents, grandparents and readers.
  • We had enough space reserved for parents, siblings, grandparents. Everyone else was free to sit wherever.
  • Ok cool, I think we'll leave it to immedaite family, grandparents, the few OOT relatives I had come in from Germany and our reader.

  • We only reserved the first row on each side for parents.  The second row on my side was for my brother, SILs and BIL.   The rest of the immediate family on both sides was in the wedding.  No grandparents on either side.

Most church weddings I've attended the first row was for the WP, and the parents started in row 2.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.

We got married outside, not in a church, but I still reserved the first two rows on both sides for family. That included grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins. My step-siblings and their spouses were also in those rows.

[QUOTE]I don't recall reserving any seating. I've always just assumed that people know whether or not they belong in the first few rows.

This. We didn't rope off seating at all.

  • We also didn't reserve seating. We didn't have a huge wedding (about 70 guests), but people left the front rows for immediate family.
  • I was shocked at the last couple of weddings I've been to.  At one, the grandparents didn't realize they were "honored guests" and ended up sitting way toward the back, and at another guests took the whole front row and had to be asked to move.  I thought both were common knowledge but apparently not.
