Thank You Notes

Hey Ladies,

I have TERRIBLE handwriting so I wanted to do something printed, but etiquette dictates that the notes be handwritten. But, I have a website that prints silver ink on a beautiful red cloth for thank you notes. AND they'll match my invitations. If I order them to be printed -in the fancy way-, are they still a "no-no"?

TIA

  • Are you personalizing every single one?  If no, then yes, it's a no-no.

  • I think it's fine as long as it's really clear that each note was written separately for each person.
  • Agreed with PP's.  If you can personalize each TY to each guest, then you are fine to have them printed.  And they should be personalized with more than just your name, like something about the gift they gave, or a certain thing about them from the wedding, etc.  If you can do that, then you are fine.  But if you are just getting pre-printed, generalized TY notes that all say the same for everyone, then its a no-no.

I gotta read this one slowly to process. It's kinda like they don't know that we know that they know.

  • Anyway, just to be clear:

The reason printed thank-you notes are normally bad etiquette is because they look like you just sent the same message to everyone and didn't put any effort into it, NOT because printing is ugly.

I just thought I'd state that explicitly because in your OP it sounds like the reason you think printed notes are bad is because normally they are ugly.  That is not the case.  Making them prettier alone doesn't make it better.  The way you make it better is by typing out a separate, personalized note for every person, just as if you were writing them separately for each person.
  • Thanks ladies. If we have them printed, each note will be 100% personalized with their name printed, gift, etc. I am just afraid of people being offended. Like StageManager14 said, some people will always give a printed thank you note the sideeye. No matter how personal & beautiful it was.

I just dont know. Maybe my ridiculous scrawl is better than a computer print out....

  • Maybe a happy medium?  Print most of the *personalized* thank you note, and then handwrite on the bottom "Thank you So-and-So! Best wishes from Mr. and Mrs. X" so it still has the handwritten touch.

  • I'm typing my thank you notes. My hand writing is completely atrocious and so is FI's. I think it would be worse if they couldn't read it. I will be typing each person a special note that will make it clear it was just for them.
