The Godfather

If you have seen the Godfather would you recommend that others watch it?  FI wants to watch it this weekend.  I do not think I want to.

Re: The Godfather

  • I would want to watch it because it's a classic.

It's not a great movie, IMO. Not really my genre.

  • It's so good.  It's SO good.

I really enjoyed the first one (not the second one, which everyone tells me is a sin).  I also read the book, which was extremely helpful to understanding what in the world was going on.

Give it a chance.  There's more to it than the mob.
  • YES!  I had never seen it so a couple of months ago, we rented the Godfather I and II and they were awesome.  I really loved them.

  • I have my issues with the Godfather, although I have been thinking lately that it is time for me to give it another chance. I tend to like mob movies, and I especially love the way Martin Scorsese depicts organized crime in movies like Goodfellas and the Departed. The Godfather gets on my nerves, though, because I really think it glorifies the mob in ways that it shouldn't. But that's just my thought.

One thing that's cool about it is that it's a much different Al Pacino than you're used to. If you're familiar with him from Scarface or the Devil's Advocate or something like that, you will be amazed at how restrained his performance is.

Can you make some kind of a deal with your FI? FI and I are both big movie buffs, but in different genres, so whenever we watch a movie together we take turns picking. That way we both get to expose each other to new stuff.

  • I really like the movie. I didn't like part 3, but liked part 2. There's also a version out there where they combine 1 and 2, and tell the story in order (2 is the Godfather growing up).
The soundtrack is nice, too. Trade him that for like, I Love You, Man or something.

  • The book is Godfather 1& 2, so I would watch them both, but Godfather 1 was better.

I still think the only reason Al Pacino won an Oscar for Scent of a Woman was to make up for the fact that he was passed over on The Godfather.

  • Absolutely, along with the movies Sarah mentioned, AND also Donnie Brasco.

Although in high school I wrote my extended essay on the mafia so I am biased.

  • I tend to be kind of bipolar about mob movies.  I really couldn't handle the Departed.  I'm not a pearl clutcher, but the swearing about put me over the edge.  In fact I remember very little about the movie besides the deaths and the swearing.

I do, however, enjoy movies like the Usual Suspects.

And Dog Day Afternoon, and Serpico, and Glengarry Glen Ross, and all the other eight or nine nominations he had before he actually won. The man is a national treasure. They should keep him in the Smithsonian.

My version of the old "watch an actor read the phone book" movie is for Clive Owen to sit there and read the phone book, while Al Pacino paces back and forth yelling "FUUCK!"

  • It's a great movie.

It's not just a shoot-em-up mafia movie, which is what I thought it was before I saw it.  There are a lot of romance/family storylines as well.

You probably would actually like the Godfather, then. It moves along at a very stately pace, and while there are some violent scenes in it, they're not like the way they would be if Martin Scorsese had directed it. I'm a big fan of the way Marty does things, so I tend to fall asleep watching the Godfather.

It's an old hyperbole to use to show how much you love seeing a particular actor. "I love Johnny Depp so much, I'd be happy to sit there and watch him read the phone book."

I think I'd watch Jeffrey Dean Morgan read the phone book if he did it out loud (Judah in Weeds and William in PS I Love You)
