Check Bounced

Hi,
I got married in October 2009. We received a check from a friend for our wedding present. After we deposited the check we found out it bounced. Any advice on how to handle this situation? Should we tell the friend? Still send a thank you note? TIA! I always appreciated reading the posts with my wedding planning:)

Re: Check Bounced

  • That's tough.  I mean, if it was truly an accident, (say there was a problem with the account) I would want to know.  But it could be awkward and embarrassing.  What I want to know is why you're just asking about this now?  Please don't tell me you waited 2 months to deposit the check.  That could be the problem right there.

I think you almost have to tell her.  I mean, if you don't, it'll throw off her checkbook records because the money never came out of the account.  She'll find out anyway when she gets her statement and sees the overdraft fee that is sure to be there.
  • We deposited the check awhile ago and figured she would figure out the check bounced... We are now finishing our thank you notes and couldn't figure out what to do. I guess we will just go ahead and send the thank you.
    Thanks for the advice!
  • Still send the TY note.

FWIW, you're technically supposed to send that TY note BEFORE you deposit the check.
  • I think you should send her a thank you and let her see that it bounced. She will be embarrased enough to know it bounced. She may send you another check.

  • I think a TY poem is called for in situations like these.

    Thank you for the gift
    But we must sadly announce
That the generous check you sent to us
    Has regrettably bounced.

    Love this.
  • Awesome poem :)

We lost a gift of $150 thanks to stupidness. The friends made out a check to Mr and Mrs dhsfirst name silslastname. When we tried to cash it (hadn't looked at it) the bank wouldn't cash it to dh because it wasn't his last name, or his sil because it wasn't her first name. So the friends said for sil to bring the check to work and they'd write another one for us. Dh took check to sil's and no one has seen it since. Dh swears he gave it to sil, sil swears she never saw it, and no check for us :(

I still don't get why they couldn't have written another check to us and we would have ripped up the old one...these are 10 year+ friends of sil so I would think they would trust her/us.
  • Katie, your friends didn't know your H's surname? How odd.
