Invitation Envelopes

My venue is all inclusive. Therefore, it includes a certificate to work with a local printer for STD's and invitations. However, I'm under the impression that the invitation only has the outer envelope. Inside will be the invitation and the RSVP card with an envelope for that (I believe, though I need to confirm this piece, unless the RSVP is more of a post card).

Is this OK etiquette-wise? I know that typically the inner envelope has the recipient's name(s) on it, so I wasn't sure.

Re: Invitation Envelopes

  • How formal is your wedding?  If it's not black tie, I think skipping the inner envelope is fine.  I don't know how Miss Manners, etc. would weigh in on it, but I know a lot of people skip them to save paper or because the invitation design doesn't work with a second envelope.

We had an inner envelope, but that's mainly because our venue package included invitations, like yours, and it included the inner envelope.  Of the wedding invitations we've received in the past year, I think only the really formal ones had 2 envelopes.
  • We bought an invitation suite that did not include or make room for inner envelopes, but we definitely wanted to make sure that people knew exatly who was invited, so we included an insert that sat at the front of the invitation that acted as an inner envelope in terms of addressing. It probably wasn't the perfect solution ettiquette wise or other, but it served our purpose rather well.
  • It's fine, though I much prefer an inner envelope.  If you want one, you should be able to purchase them separately.
  • OK, thanks for the feedback. I'll look into getting them, if not, no biggie.

  • I would say it totally depends on the style of the wedding and the invitations. In all honesty, our invites came with them, thats why we used them. If we had chosen a more laid back invite I dont think they woud have come.
I've received plenty of invites without inner envelopes and I was still JUST as excited to pull them out and see what they looked like :)
  • I received some without but they have a ribbon go around the invite. There is a label with the names of the invitees on that. I've received invites that have inner envelopes and ones without. The ones without were usually more casual affairs than the ones with the ribbons or inner envelopes, IMO.
