NWR- ever been to the drive-in?

DH just surprised me and told me we're going to the drive-in movies tonight! We're seeing Salt at 9, and The Other Guys at 10:50.

I'm usually in bed by 11:30 so I hope I can stay up. I've never been to the drive-in before so I'm unreasonably excited.

Silly question- does the sound come through the car radio? if yes, doesn't this drain the battery?

Re: NWR- ever been to the drive-in?

  • Yep, there's a functioning drive in theater where I grew up. The sound does come through the radio, and it doesn't kill the battery!
On bed rest since Groundhog's Day and every day since has been exactly the same.

Haha thats funny - the drive in where I live (well, south of me) is playing the other guys and salt, but the other guys is first. I really wanted to go tonight but my H kiboshed the idea. I have never in my years encountered running into a problem with the battery. You just tune the radio to a specific station for your screen.

You will have so much fun, I love going to the drive in.
  • Nebb, it's the one in Oakville, is there another one in the GTA?
  • The drive in near me is playing the same combo tonight.  H and I considered going.  Sometimes we leave after the first movie if we're tired, but it really is an awesome experience!  Have fun!

Im not sure, I live more in the niagara area - the drive in we have here has 4 screens. Last weekend each screen was playing 4 movies each for 12$/pp!
  • 4 movies? My butt would fall asleep! Have a fun saturday night everyone.
  • You put your car on accessory and listen through the radio. We have one in Baltimore that is amazing! I wanted to go tonight, but we both work too late to get there on time.

Bring a pillow and a blanket for comfort!

  • I have seen them both ways. The few that are left back home have the speakers which you can pull up beside but you can also turn on the car radio. The one that is here doesn't have the speakers, you have to listen through your car speakers/radio.

Btw- I love drive in's! They are so fun. There are so very few of them left in the US anymore that soon they will all probably be gone.

I remember my parents telling me stories about when they were growing up and how they would sneak in their friends in the trunk & then let them out when they got in their parking spot. They would all split the cost...lol
  • We're at the Oakville drive in all the time, I love it and they have the best chili cheese fries ever and really good popcorn. So fun.

  • sorry if someone said this already, but usually at intermission between the movies, you have time to turn the car on to recharge the battery. some cars cant go 4 hours on the radio without a charge in the middle.

i used to live down the road from a drive in, we would go every week. its great, the one here you can bring in your own food/drinks, wear jammies and have a lot of fun with it. the one here is really affordable, i havent gone this year, but it was only like $15 a car. we put a twin mattress int he back of our pick-up with lots of big pillows and blankets. and park backwards. when we would bring friends, we would bring camp chairs for them to sit in.

  • Yes we have three drive ins in my area, I love them.  You can hear the movie over the car radio or use the little speakers if they have them though they don't work as well.  But I agree with PP to start up your car at intermisson to recharge your battery.

  • It was totally awesome, I got a corn dog and fries, and then at intermission we got popcorn too. Both good movies, would definitely visit the drive-in again. I think it was 11$ a person.
  • Drive ins were much more fun when cars had bench seats.

I know, showing my age again...

  • I'm old enough to have been to one of the old-fashioned drive-ins, in which the sound came through a portable speaker hooked up outside the window of your car.  Let me tell you, the ones that work through your radio are lots better!
  • I was stranded at one. Branded a fool.
