Snack/app menu for my party, please review

Hey, so my kickball team is coming over tonight around 7pm. We have a late game, so FI and I have a tradition of having a party before the game (since we're not going to the bar at 11 on a weeknight, when the game is over).

Here's what we're serving:

tortilla chips with guacamole and salsa
pretzles with pepperjack dip (it's sour cream based, like french onion dip)
pita chips with 3 layer hummus
2 kinds of cheese and crackers
spinach and artichoke bites wrapped with wontons
jalapeno poppers
cheesecake brownie bites

I'm also thinking about getting some regular cookies for another sweet item and maybe some deli salads - tortellini salad, potato salad, etc. I want mostly cold things that can sit out and can be eaten while standing up with a small plate and fork. I know it's kind of dairy heavy, so if I get deli salads I'll get at least one that's non-dairy. Does this look okay? The party will be about 2 hours and we'll also have 4 kinds of beer (Amstel Light, Stella, Sam Adams Cherry Wheat and Sam Summer)  and Sangria (red and white).

  • I'd be happy with that!  Can I come over?

  • grape tomatoes and boccaccini cheese on a toothpick with balsamic reduction drizzle!  salad on a stick.  easy peasy.

    sounds good.

  • I think adding the deli salads are a great idea.  The menu looks great.  Are you making the sangria?
  • I would totally come to that party.
  • So you guys eat a bunch of food and drink beers before your game?  Sounds like a fun sport to me!

That's a good idea. I made some feta/olive/tomato skews last year. The feta fell off, so I just sprinkled it over them, but they were still good.

Yes, you're all invited. You should probably leave for your respective airports now. The drive from LAX during rush hour is a bitch.

  • Sounds great.  I especially love your choices of beer.  I can't wait for vacation when I can consume some great beer.  (select 55 is literally a hold me over with a small taste of beer while I lose weight sort of thing just for the record from unpopular opinions).  I love summer beer selections from Sam Adams!  :)

Well, it's a "social/athletic organization." And we also sponsor a charity so it doesn't look like we're just a bunch of alcoholics. Haha. We have a team bar (private room at a sports bar) that we go to after games for beer and pizza. The games are usually at 7:15 or 8:15, but when our game is scheduled for 9:15, it's easier to drink before! Then again, I think 10:30 is a totally appropriate bedtime. Also, I have to pick my friend up at the airport at 11 tonight.

I do have to say that last season when we did this, the "signature drink" was really strong, I was a little drunk during the game, and I fell and hurt my knee really bad. I had trouble running for the rest of the season.

And usually we make our own sangria (cheap red wine, cointreu, citrus fruit) but we just picked up a couple bottles at a winery in LA a few weeks ago. We'll probably still add some fruit.

  • Well it sounds fun, and don't worry, 10:30 is a perfectly reasonable bed time for me too.  I get upset if I'm still up after 11 on a weeknight.

  • boccaccini is perfect for that.  it's not crumbly and it takes on the flavor of whatever you pair it with. it's awesome.

[QUOTE]Is the pepperjack dip a premade dip? If not, how do I make it? It sounds soo good right now. The rest of the menu sounds great!

It's a mix. Like when you make french onion or horseradish dip from the little packets. We got a bunch of "gourmet" dip packets at a craft show a few months back. It's just dehydrated stuff you mix with some mayo and sour cream. Really good, though! We have horseradish, garlic, jalepeno, pepperjack, dill and a few others.

  • Sounds amazing!
Will you be able to play kickball after all that?

Maybe add a veggies and dip if you feel you must add something.  I think you're fine with what you have though.

That looks great! I second the bocconcini suggestion made by Mandy.

I'm also unsure as to how you'll slot salads in there! Unless you do something like celery and carrot sticks with dip?

Now, seeing as I've provided you with feedback: can you tell me what you think of this menu I'm cooking/serving for dinner tomorrow?

Snacks: Brie and quince paste with crackers.

Starter: Harissa, artichoke and bocconcini melted onto small breads (can't find the appropriate terminology for US to describe the type of breads!).

Main: Maple and Apple Cider Vinegar Pork Roast with Pumpkin Mash

    Dessert: Caramel dumplings and icecream.

Good for winter dinner? We're having 10 people over so I threw this together yesterday (but decided to re-arrange work days so I can stay home tomorrow to prepare!). Overboard a touch? But I do love entertaining!

    Have fun with your party!

  • That looks great Sun! And thanks, we definitely had enough food at my party!
