Open and send thank you?

My fiancee and I received our first gift in the mail today (our wedding isn't until October though).  We were wanting to wait and open it the morning after the wedding.  Should we open it now and send a thank you, or not open it but still send a thank you informing them that we received the gift but are waiting until the wedding to open it?

Open it now to verify nothing is broken/missing and send a thank you.  Don't use it until after the wedding.

I would open it now, send a thank you, but don't use it until after you are married.
