Metric question

So...
I am trying to convert my height to metrics (the scale already took care of the weight, grr).  I am 5'5".  Using an on-line converter it says I am 1.524 meters and 12.7 centimeters.  When I save that figure in Sparkpeople it changes to 1 meter 65 centimeters.  Which is correct?

Also when I converted everything to metric it likes to say my BMI is in the obese range.  When it's in pounds/inches, my BMI is only one point into the "over"

Yeah, I'm not big on the whole metrics thing..

  • it's 165 cm.  If I'm not mistaken, both of your numbers are pretty much the same.  Because a meter is 100 cm, yes?  So if you add them together, you get roughly 165 cm.

  • oh so do I.

The whiole stepping on the scale thing today has NOT made for a happy Mrs.  My "guesstimate" was off by 10 lbs.  And it's time for summer clothes here.  This is not good.

The two height calculations are identical...1.524 meters = 152.4 centimeters, add the 12.7 centimeters to that and you get 165 centimeters which is 1m 65 cm.

I would need to know what your weight is to know why your calculation for that was different but you might not want to share that.

    HTH.

ETA: I didn't intend to post exactly what others did...there were no replies when I read it :)

Thanks Guys!  H was at work and he gets pissy when I ask these kinds of questions becuase he thinks I should have learned metrics by now since I'll be living with them fo the rest of my life.

  • Yeah, I stopped weighing myself two years ago. My unit of measurement is- jeans are fitting nicely, or jeans are a bit too snug.

  • I've finally started fitting into jeans I haven't worn in 2 years. Go me.

  • Congrats Fish!

I usually use the "do my clothes fit" scale too and then I pulled out the summer shorts.  That begged the question "just how fat has my ass gotten?!?!?"  hence the scale.

  • Yeah, if I used that scale, I'd be fucked becaues I can always convince myself that my clothes fit.

  • You take 65 inches and x it by 2.54
To get weight take your weight say 120 and divide it by 2.2

At leaset this is part of the way we figure BMI in my classes.

    And congrats fishy!

  • Spanks, Ricks!

Losing weight isn't easy, but it's nice to see the results.

  • Lol converting to metrics will not change your BMI. The only reason it would change is if you (or the website you're using) has made an error in converting, or because they're using different health weight cut-offs (eg. in some countries, what counts as 'healthy' is higher or lower than others. Eg, in some countries a BMI of 18.5 is underweight, in others it's classed as healthy. My understanding is that it's based on the norms in that country). Your BMI (as in, the number- the interpretation varies as I just mentioned) will be stable regardless of which form of unit you're using if it's being calculated correctly.

Anyway: 165 cms is about five foot five, and as someone else points out: 1 metre and 52 centimetres plus another 13 centimetres = 1 metre and 65 centimeters. So they're telling you exactly the same thing. :)

To work out your BMI, all you need to do is calculate your weight in kilos (a kilo is approx 2.204 lbs, so divide your lbs weight by 2.204 to get your kilos weight), and then divide that by your height in metres (1.65) squared.

OR, easier solution, just look on a chart: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/e/e9/Body_mass_index_chart.svg/690px-Body_mass_index_chart.svg.png
