Witnesses? Two parts...

Who do you use as witnesses? Does it have to be the BM and MOH?

My FI's older brother is marrying us, his younger brother is his BM and my college best friend is  my MOH. I was thinking of asking my FI's sister to witness for us along with the BM (FI's younger brother)...but then if we only need 2 witnesses we wouldn't need my MOH to sign, which is typically one of the honors of being an MOH right? I thought it'd be nice to have all of my FI's siblings on our license, the officiant, the BM and his sister...and us...is this a weird idea?

It'd be a way to incorporate my new sister-in-law...but then I'd have to tell my MOH I dont need her to sign my license. But if a MOH doesn't expect to be a witness in the first place it may not be a big deal. What do you think? Who did you use??

Re: Witnesses? Two parts...

  • We used our MOH and BM. It was what we chose. When we applied for our marriage license, we had to put the name of the witnesses on it. I have been an MOH and someone else signed instead of me. I didn't care.
  • Aww...I love the idea of the moms doing it.  As far as the question being asked, I don't know why you'd want both individuals to be from your fiance's side...  Why not have a "representative" from each side?
  • We actually wanted our parents to do it but forgot to tell anyone. One of my bridesmaids and our groomswoman signed it instead. We had signed our part already, so only the witnesses needed to sign it, and it happened sometime during the reception; we don't even know when. No big deal, but if you have someone particular you want to sign it, speak up!
What did you think would happen if you walked up to a group of internet strangers and told them to get shoehorned by their lady doc?~StageManager14

  • I think that you should pick your witness and your FI should pick his. They don't have to be from the WP, it can be whomever you want.

My sister, who was MOH, sang a special number while we were signing, so my brother signed in her place. Totally cool.
  • Stage is right. Laws vary from state to state, so look into that. In Arizona -- if that's where you're getting marries -- I do think it's two, and they just have to be over 18 years of age.
