I need a new book

And I'm thinking maybe a biography or something of the nonfictional sort.  Any good recommendations?

Re: I need a new book

  • It's kind of depressing - but "All But My Life" by Gerda Weissman Klein.  It's her life story of surviving the holocaust.

She's an incredible lady, I had the opportunity to hear her speak and meet her.

ETA - I posted this in the other thread.

  • I saw that on Goodreads and thought it looked really interesting.  I've always had an interest in the Holocaust, and I prefer the nonfictional to the fictional when it comes to that subject.

That may work for you. I found it pretty funny and enlightening.

Same here.  I really like history a lot - I know just enough to be dangerous or sound intelligent in conversation Wink

I have a lot of interest in WWII and the Holocaust.

I definitely recommend reading it.  If you ever get to Boston - she's memorialized (not sure if that's the right word since she's still alive) here on our Holocaust Memorial.  She also just won the Presidental Medal of Freedom.

PS - Where in Jersery are you?  I have family down there.

Edited to fix typos - doesn't help the "sound intelligent" argument.

  • If I ever make it up to Boston I'd definitely check that out.  I went to the Holocaust museum in DC about 10 years ago and still can't get over it.  FI and I have been talking about taking a trip down for awhile now.

I grew up in South Jersey.  Where is NJ is your fam?

  • If you ever make it to Boston let me know - I'll be happy to give tips/ideas.

We went to DC about 6 years ago.  It was definitely a moving experience.

The did/do live in the Neptune/Asbury Park Area and my mom is in Lakewood.

  • I really enjoyed Lost Mountain by Erik Reece.  It's about mountaintop removal in eastern Kentucky and West Virginia.  Sounds boring, but it's a really good, fast read.

I also liked Zeitoun, which is about the aftermath of Katrina through the eyes of a man who stayed behind in New Orleans after many evacuated. It was really exciting and interesting and completely changed the way I thought about Katrina.

  • I read a lot of books based on the Holocaust. I just read Sarah's Key (fiction) and I read On Hitler's Mountain (nonfiction). On Hitler's Mountain is pretty interesting and told from a German girl's perspective. It's a memoir. Another decent fiction book related to the Holocaust is The Book Thief. I also plan on reading Hunting Evil (nonfiction) once I finish my book for a book club.

  • What are you interests? Here are two I've read in the last year. Both of these are pretty funny, but they are both non-fiction biographies.

    http://www.amazon.com/Confessions-Prairie-Bitch-Survived-Learned/dp/0061962147
If you ever watched Little House on the Prairie, it's by the woman who played Nellie Olson.

Biography of a famous physicist. You really don't need to know anything about physics at all. He's just a hilarious person in general.

  • Avs, The Book Thief and Sarah's Key have both been on my Nook wish list for quite awhile, so maybe I'll check them out.

Sparrow, my interests vary.  I'm open to any recommendations because I don't really have one specific genre/topic that I always go to.

Thanks for all the suggestions, ladies!
