They're engaged??

2

Re: They're engaged??

  • receiving a sacrament is a big deal in the catholic church.  we really took it seriously.

I promise I'm not trying to be judgey, just genuinely curious. If you take it really seriously, then why engage in pre marital sex at all? Unless, I suppose you didn't know that this was the person you were going to receive the sacrament with until you got engaged, and then made the decision. Am I right?

  • Kiki & Fische... when FI and I were going through our pre-cana stuff with the Catholic church, the Deacon we met with asked us if we were planning to abstain from sex during our engagement. When FI gave him a look like he might have lost his mind, he explained that the church sees a period of abstinence has a cleansing/healing time (similar to why people "give up" things they like for Lent), and that it's recommended along with reconciliation before a couple gets married.

Growing up Catholic, I totally understood what he meant.

But as soon as we walked out of the church, FI looked at me and said "we're not really going to do that, right?" So the whole idea went out the window for us.
  • Well, I didn't know that, Hens. Makes sense I suppose if you were raised that way.

  • Ok, I see what you're saying.  I guess being the satan worshipper I am (joke), it's pointless to me.  But, to each their own- if it makes you feel better, go for it.

    And honestly, I don't understand 99% of Catholicism, so I guess there's that ;)

HA!  That's exactly what my FI did after we went through the pre-cana.

  • Hehe yeah FI is not Catholic - and actually he's kind of anti-Catholic - and I'm so very proud of him for just putting up with pre-cana and agreeing to be married in a Catholic church, I saw no point in pressing the issue any more.

And now that we've all learned something today, I vote we all go home. :)

I should say, he's not "anti-Catholic" as much as he's just livid about all the problems the Church has been having lately, and the Church's seeming lack of ability to do anything about it. Which I'm not necessarily happy about either.
  • Are the Palins Catholic? Or did this conversation just take a tangent?

  • vally we might have just made a hard left. I'm not sure if the Palin's are Catholic or not.
  • Pfft, old news. ;-)

Haven't read all the comments, but I think if you're scared to tell your parents you're engaged (she told the magazine before her mom), something is very wrong.

  • The Catholic stuff just came in to play because Calypso said that's why she and her FI decided to be abstinent during their engagement, saying maybe Bristol and Levi had a similar good reason.

  • Google isn't helping me with this too much. Apparently Sarah was raised Catholic but switched. I found an online Catholic forum who is also talking about this, but they're just being judgy and nobody has brought up the abstinence thing.
  • Calypso- This isn't meant to come off as rude I'm just generally curious. Did you find it difficult to just stop having sex I assume you had regularly? I feel like suddenly stopping would put a strain on your relationship but maybe it did the opposite for you.

  • Someone asked this... Sarah Paln is Christian, supposedly Pentecostal.

There are rumours that they (Bristol and Levi) might be getting together to do a reality tv show. I, for one, love train wrecks, so FINGERS CROSSED that this rumour is true!

This engagement was all over the news. I tried to see what FOX News had to say and the only article I could find when I searched for "Bristol Palin" was an article that states Levi took back some things he had said about Sarah. It didn't say what he took back. It then listed some things he had said, AS IF he took those things back.
    This was as of yesterday.
