Post dinner poll

If one week before your wedding, you were told with 100% certainty that you and your FI would eventually be divorced. The person who told you is a definitive source (think time-traveller or prophet) and they can't/won't give you any other information, such as how long the marriage will be, happiness during the marriage, or the reason for divorce.

Knowing the inevitable, would you still get married?

I only like time travellers when they help me win the lottery or make money.
  • To answer my own poll, I would still get married, especially since I wouldn't know the circumstances of the divorce. I know I would regret not marrying FI and I would want to try to get as many happy years out of the marriage as possible.

That said, I would hate knowing that it would someday end...

  • Yes I would. I don't believe in time travelers or soothsayers or whatever. Also, I believe in our ability to make choices that influence what will happen to us. Even in literature that involves the prediction of the future, it is usually represented as changeable.

Does anyone watch FlashForward? My friend told me last night, "This show is annoying me, because everything they do is making the things they saw come true. Ugh."

I just finished re-reading Oedipus, so I think I am just in a tragic state of mind.

  • Yes, I would marry, but I would not have children with that person.
  • Absolutely. I don't live in a fantasy world where I think divorce doesn't happen. I feel 100% confident about the state of my marriage now, but I have no idea what will happen in the future.

I have had many relationships end and felt sad for a while, but I am still happy for the experience and don't regret it. So it is worth it to me to try.

  • My parents brought this type of question to me when they found out Scott was 10 years older. I would rather have 10 good years with him than 10 shitty years with someone else. I would also rather have 100 good years with him, but you get my point.

That's a really good point. I would probably also want to draw up a pre-nup before the marriage. And put my name in all my books.

I liked it at first, but now I just want to see if Joseph Fiennes starts drinking because his wife cheats on him, or if his wife cheats on him because he starts drinking. Hurry up! And I want to know if John Cho is going to die. I hope not. I actually like him. But Dominic Monaghan is douchetastic and Commodore Norrington is boring me.

Some guy said something to me about my husband being ten years younger. That in 10 years he would be in his prime and I would be in my 40s and what if he left me for a younger woman?

Welllll...even if we were the same age he could still leave me for a younger woman in 10 years. And I could leave him one day for a rich old man. Who knows? Stupid question.
