Re: Another earthquake?

  • There was a 5.4 in venezuela last week too. I think thats what the magnatude it was, i didnt see it in the news for long.
  • But it's not 2012 yet!
    image
  • Thats the thing vallyhoo... earthquakes are something connected to 2012, that need to be watched. The increase of them in areas that dont normally get them as well. Changes is the earth are more likely than a huge apololypse.

I sound like a total quack.
  • You don't sound like a quack. I was keeeeding :)

There was one yesterday in Guatamela and one in Argentina (not sure when though).

  • Dont tell me these things, I didnt know that!! I wish I was a scientist at times like this, id like to figure out whats going on.
  • Well, we're always going to have earthquakes as the plates are pushing and pulling.  The severity is always going to be changing based upon how long it's been since the previous earthquake, what the cause is.... etc.

Eventually, the land is going to get pulled back together and new land is going to form.  Just part of life on Earth. :)
  • The sky is falling!  HALP!
    image
  • Just to put it into perspective, there are LOTS of earthquakes.  Every day.

  • a 5.0 is really not very big. If you google "recent earthquakes" it comes up with a CA and NV website.  You will see CA has several hundred at a time.  6.0 is typically when it becomes damaging.

  • Ditto Kiki.  I guess the last one to hit the Caymans was in 2004 but that's not so long ago.

It's big depending on where you live. In Alaska, no, its a normal thing we don't think too much of it. In a 3rd world country or somewhere poverty sticken and not well built? It can be a big problem.
  • True- a place that has crappy buildings it would be.  I do think people would not be hurt nearly as bad though.

  • Most of the earthquakes in that list didnt top 3.0. I think if a swarm of 5.0+ hitting an area is interesting and something to pay attention to. Yes they happen often but its worth noting when they become stronger.

How does this even make sense?  A building collapsing because it's not built for earthquakes is going to hurt people no matter what the magnitude of the earthquake.  So if it takes a 7.0 to make a building collapse in CA (just making stuff up for the sake of argument, people), but only takes a 3.0 to make a building collapse in Haiti, a building still collapsed.  On top of people.  Sure, the building may be made out of wood instead of concrete, but it's still a building.  On your head.

  • I never said that either.
  • A 3.0 you probably won't even feel, unless you are really close to the epicenter. (Take it from someone who lives cloe to dozens of fault lines - we have mini quakes just about every day that are only detectable with scientific equipment.)

    I was being facetious.

  • But a damaged building can still hurt people without crumbling to the ground.  People can get trapped.  Big pieces of building material can fall, without the building crumbling to the ground.  I mean, I get what you're trying to say, but you should probably try to look at it in the perspective of someone in a developing country.  Damaged buildings and injured people (especially when there is poor medical care and facilities) makes it a tragedy, just like collapsing buildings in a developed country.  Try looking at things from a different perspective, not from a privileged American perspective.

If this was directed at me, like I said, I was just using numbers for the sake of argument, not trying to be scientifically accurate.  I've never felt an earthquake.

JK, please tell me how you took something horrific and tragic and yet managed to make it funny when read out loud? That's talent.
  • Manda, I'm just glad I'm not the only one that giggled a little when I read it again.  I assure you I wasn't going for humor--pure coincidence.

Even if the building doesnt fall down, if its crumbling or cracked... you  kind of cant live in it. Meaning you have no where to live. I think thats pretty tragic.
  • Exactly Nebb.  Not to mention, what happens then the next time a "small" earthquake hits?  Maybe that time, the damaged building DOES crumble to the ground.

    I guess I'm feisty today.
  • Im just curious what angned will come out with next. Opposite sexes cant be friends. its ok to live in falling apart buildings. What other logic defying advice will she give us next?!
  • I don't know, but I hope it's good.  I'm in a fightin' mood today!
