Is it necessary?

I think my fiance and I are gonna forego the rehearsal dinner. We don't see the point in having one, since we're having a short civil ceremony (with MOH, bridesmaid and a best man) at the place we're having the reception. I just don't see why we need to practice walking down the aisle and saying 5 lines. Do people throw rehearsal dinners even if there is no actual rehearsal of the wedding? Is it ok to not have one? Is there something else we can do instead?

  • The only thing that is required is a bride, groom, officiant, sometimes witnesses, and a marriage license. Beyond that, you are free to do or not do whatever you want!

I'm not doing a rehearsal dinner either.

  • You definitely don't need to have one.

If you do anything else (going out to dinner), people would probably expect you to pay for it.  I don't know if there's a money issue or not.

  • If there is no rehearsal, you could safely skip the RD, IMO. Instead, meet with family and friends for drinks and appetizers. Go bowling. Go to the movies.
  • We might not do a rehearsal, but we're doing an RD or a welcome dinner for our families, WP and OOT guests. You can have a small party the night before if you'd like.

  • We're not having one. Some people are coming in Thursday, some Friday morning. Our wedding is at 4:00 on Friday. We'll have a quickie rehearsal in the chapel and what happens happens.

  • We didn't have a rehearsal but we held a welcome dinner for everyone the night before.  Just gave us another chance to see everyone and treat them to a meal since they came such a long way.
  • order some pizza and call it a day.  less stress for all involved. :)
