an early gift

We sent out our invites just the other day.  We already got one back that declined.  It was from my FI's former next door neighbor, who is older and has been having health issues.  he is upset b/c he wanted to come.  he did leave us a nice note with the reply card and gave us a check.  I know we are not suppose to use the gifts until after the wedding, but should we deposit the check now?  Deposit and keep in a separte account?  Or just hold on to it until after the wedding?

Re: an early gift

  • Deposit it now, don't spend the money, and write him a thank you card immediately.

  • Deposit the check so it doesn't interfere with the guy's account (I hate when people wait and screw up my banking).  Write him a lovely thank you.  Don't spend the money until after the wedding.
  • Deposit, send a thank-you note, but do not spend.  Keep in a separate account, or even cash the check and keep the cash somewhere that you won't spend it!

  • I second Avion - keep the cash in an envelope somewhere. It will be easier not to spend that way : )

I also hate when people wait to cash checks. That's why I generally don't write them if I can help it. I've been known to actually go out of my way to go somewhere and pay in cash if I can.
