Hostess gift for a shower that isn't mine.

I'm attending a baby shower this weekend. Should I bring something for the host, like flowers? Or should I bring cookies/a dish, even though I haven't been asked to do so? Or is just the gift for the mom-to-be enough?

  • I've never been to a shower, mine or anyone else's, where guests brought the hostess a gift. If you think it's customary to bring a gift for the hostess in your circle, then go ahead, but I've never seen it done in mine. I always just bring a gift for the mother-to-be or bride-to-be. It's up to the mother-to-be or bride-to-be to give a gift to the hostess, IMO.

  • I don't know what's common in my circle, because I've never been to a baby shower as an adult. ;) But I don't think many of the attendees have been to many baby showers, either.

  • I agree with Ace. Gift for the momtobe, but no hostess gift. That will be up to the momtobe or her family to provide. If the hostess requests for people to bring desserts to contribute, then the cookies would be fine, but only if that was clearly requested.

No, she didn't request it at all. It's from 4-8 and she will be feeding us dinner, but I'm not sure if she's making it or if she's having it catered. I DO know there will be both alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages! Either way, she didn't ask for food contributions, and I've only met her a few times, so I'm not sure I'm comfortable emailing her and asking if I can bring something, especially if 1) she's having it catered so my lame cookies or 5 layer dip would look sad or 2) no one else has.

Okay, well, I have some good baby presents from the registry. I think I'll throw on a nice sundress and just show up with the boppy and diaper covers. ;)

  • I don't think guests are supposed to bring hostess gifts for baby showers.  I recently attended a shower much like the one you described and nobody brought the hostess anything.  She had it catered and had cocktails and mocktails.  I thanked her for having us (it was a co-ed shower) and brought gifts only for the mother to be.
