dances

I will post this over in Reception Ideas as well, but I know it's not as busy over there.

I need to choose songs for our special dances - the father/daughter and anniversary dance, specifically. I love anniversary dances...

I wanted to use "Cats in the Cradle" as my father/daughter dance. That songs is special to my dad and I, as we used to sing it together all the time when I was a kid. I don't know why, I think it was just my favorite, and my dad used to play it on his guitar all the time. My question - is it an appropriate song? Is it a bad one to use?

And any suggestions for an anniversary dance would be great!

TIA!

I'm P&Ring for a bit! I will be back.

Re: dances

  • I think if it's special to you, you should use it.

I don't have any suggestions for an anniversary dance because we didn't do one. But, all the classics work well here, perhaps a Sinatra or Michael Buble or something like that.

  • The words of Cats in the Cradle would give me pause, but I'm probably the only one.

For the anniversary dance, something classic, like L-O-V-E, What a Wonderful World, Fly Me to the Moon, The Way You Look Tonight, etc. would be great.
  • For our anniversary dance, we used Michael Buble's version of "That's All".  It's a really sweet song when you hear the lyrics.  There are many classic singers who do this song as well.
  • Yeah the lyrics are what's holding me back. But the sad thing is, it's true of my childhood, my dad was gone a lot, salesperson and farmer...

I like the ideas for the anniversary dance, thanks everyone!
  • We're doing "it had to be you" for our anniversary dance. Also in the running were "they can't take That away from me" and "the best is yet to come"

We're working with our DJ to create a sort of mash up of songs for the anniversary dance. We'll choose one current song (probably Train's Marry Me) then for each decade we'll fade into a song from that decade. Knowing who is coming we'll probably end with a song from either the 40's or 50's

  • Cats in the Cradle is a song about a terrible father who has no time for his kid, so his kid grows up and has no time for his father. I get that maybe your dad wasn't around much, but that song would strike me as mean, as a guest. I would take it as you basically calling your dad out for never being around for you, and I feel like, if your relationship is so poor that you are comfortable calling him out that way, you probably shouldn't be dancing with him at all.

  • That's what I was worried about StephBean! I mean, he was a busy father, and I have grown up a lot like him now, we're business partners, and we have an excellent relationship. Everyone always tells me I'm just like him. And growing up, it was one of our favorite songs. But I think I will probably choose something else, just because most people won't get it.
  • Your dance should be what has meaning to you and the person with whom you will be dancing.

If anyone has a problem with the lyrics, it's their problem. If the lyrics were about killing yourself or others or full of swearing, maybe choose something else...but again, your choice.
