NWR: Paint the windows?

So we have these old casement style windows.  The trim is stained/varnished and doesn't look too bad.  We are painitng the trim white around some aluminum windows that we have and the skirting boards will also be painted white.

H and just can't decide if we should leave the old pretty windows wood, or paint them white too.  The wall is a pale "Green Mist"

What we have:

What they would look like white:

Any opinions?

Re: NWR: Paint the windows?

  • Paint them. I think it'll help brighten things up
  • I think it will look lighter if you paint them. But I LOVE the look of natural woodwork.

Growing up, we lived in a 150 year old farm house. My bedroom was the only room in the house with the natural wood baseboards and window casings. It was really nice. The walls were light, so the room looked pretty airy otherwise.

If you're afraid about it looking dark, perhaps you can sand and stain them a lighter color?

  • Mery this house has so much dark wood in it, we're ready to scream.  We also have this "feature" wall that, as of right now is staying brown.

HA! Well, you should have shown that picture in the first place. I like your ceiling beams.

i'm trying to picture some of the wood painted and some of it not painted. I think it could work.

  • Oh then you'll love this one.  This is the master bedroom.  I think that "feature" wall is going to be white, pretty soon.

  • Ooh I think your house is gorgeous. If you paint them white it'll make that stained glass pop too which would be pretty.
  • Thanks Roxy.

It's just too bad the previous owners painted it with a mop.  We already got rid of the blood red semi gloss dining area.

  • The house is dark. I would get rid of all those feature walls. I think you have to decide to either paint all the woodwork white or leave it all stained and brighten up the house in other ways.
  • What kind of wood is it?  How old is the house?

My first instinct is to say never ever paint trim.  I have helped on a couple of rehabs on century homes and the most tedious, time consuming, pain in the neck parts of any of it was stripping layers of paint and old varnish off the trim.

If the house has any historical value, or if the wood is quality, I would not paint it.

Can't wait to see "after" pictures.
  • Loopy, I'm right there with you on historical stuff.  However, this house was built in the mid to late 80s.  The trim is just flat board crap.

However, those feature walls look like they were reclaimed from someplace.  The casement windows may or may not be old enough to count.  The rest of the trim...gets a coat of really pretty white.
