Lost Gifts, now what!!??

My Husband and I were married two weeks ago.  We went on a wonderful honeymoon and returned last week.  Prior to leaving we had a day to open the cards we received at the wedding.  We were very fortunate to have been given both checks and cash as gifts.  The cash we took on our honeymoon.  The checks we left at our house to deposit afterwards.  When we got home, we went looking for the checks and can not find them anywhere.  We have torn our house apart, looking in every shoe, coat pocket, behind appliances, everywhere.  What do we do now?  It doesnt appear that anyone would have broken in and stolen them, but we have searched so much we are starting to think that is the only explanation.  Do we alert the guests who gifted checks that there is a possibility they were stolen in case they want to stop payment? We would offer to pay any fees associated with doing that, but is that appropriate?  We are not trying to get additional gifts or have people think we are fishing for more either.  We are so upset and embarassed, we don't know how to proceed.

  • Have you checked every single box from other gifts?  Was anyone in the house while you were gone that could have accidently thrown them out?

  • Slow down, and retrace your steps before you left.  Are you certain of where you put them?  Was anyone in your house?  Parent, friend?  Perhaps they saw them and hid them for you?

If you still can't find them, I would call or email so that people can stop payment, if they choose, but either way - still send a thank you note.  They did give you a gift, whether you can use it or not.

  • Is it possible you put the cheques back into the cards? We kept ours in the cards so when we returned we knew who gave the gift. Did you happen to slide them into another gift box? Could they be in a car? Your guest book? I find it unlikely that someone would have broken in and taken the cheques and nothing else. After all, the cheques would be addressed to you and would be hard for someone else to cash. If I were you, I'd continue looking awhile first. I bet you put them into a "safe place" that you just forgot about. Good luck :)
  • Aw, man!  THat really sucks.  I hate when I put something important in a safe place and then can't find it when I need it.  I bet you have done just that.  Come back and update us when you find them (b/c I know you will!)
