Cheap thank you notes?

I was considering making my own thank you notes with card stock and a "thank you" stamp to save some money.  Has anyone done this?  Will I end up hating myself for creating extra work?

Re: Cheap thank you notes?

  • You can get cheap TY notes at Target, Wal Mart, Michaels, etc.

I worry that if you have to make the cards, you won't actually get around to making them, writing them, and mailing them. Or, it would take forever.
  • I don't know that you could make them cheaper than you can buy them.  We bought a bunch of the 6/$1 packs in the clearance aisle at Michaels.  It probably would have cost at least that much for the supplies.

  • I plan to just buy packs at Michaels or AC Moore with their 50% off coupons.  I hate writing thank yous so if I have to make them that would probably throw me over the edge.
  • I did what you're talking about for my shower....I'm honestly not sure how much it saved, but I liked how it looked, and it really barely took any extra time.  It was nothing fancy, just a stamp on a blank card with edging.  I'm doing the same for the wedding, and just keeping an eye out for cheap blank notes and buying them when I see them - I figure they don't have to all be exactly the same, people won't compare.
But, if you don't care too much how it looks either way and are just doing it to save money, I doubt you'd save much; you can get cheap thank you notes lots of places.

I think that sounds nice if you want to do it.  It doesn't sound like that much work, especially since your FI/new H should be helping you--you guys can do them while you watch TV or something.  I would try to make them before the wedding so less work to do when you sit down to write the bulk of the notes.  We did something similar for our welcome bags (stamp on a brown paper bag), and it wasn't hard.  (We got a custom stamp from this Etsy shop and were really pleased with it, if you are looking to get one made.)
  • It's not tacky, but for the quantity of thank you cards you'll be writing and the work involved in making, and considering how cheaply you can buy nice looking thank you cards, I'd just buy them.  I bought something like this ( http://www.target.com/p/thank-you-cards-silver-50-counts/-/A-14094270) from Target.  50 cards for $15.  They were simple, elegant, and I can use my leftovers whenever.
  • I went to target and bought 10 packs of 10 cards for $1 each :)  Postage is expensive enough, you don't have to spend a ton on cards.
  • I would just look around for discounts, like PP's have said. I found a sale at Target and got packs of 25 for $1 each! I bought about 5 packs and still had a couple packs left over, so I'm glad I didn't waste money on more expensive ones, or use up all my free time making them after the HM.
  • Thanks everyone.  Sounds like my best bet is to keep my eyes open for a good sale.

  • I ordered mine on VistaPrint and was able to get them customized with our name on the front of the cards.  I don't recall how much we paid but I know it wasn't much.

  • I made mine! I cut cardstock to A2 size and then heat embossed an orchid stamp that I am using throughout my wedding paper goods. It looks gorgeous and classy, and I'm very glad that I did it. And it's inexpensive! I think I spent about $30 total on all my thank yous, including the extras for showers and parties. It does take time, but it will save money in the long run. I would recommend that you get a paper cutter with the blade attached to the arm if you are going to go this route, because cutting that much paper with scissors will drive you mad.

We ordered ours through Vista Print using a GroupOn.  I know I spent less per card than I could get at Target or Wal-mart.  It's probably cheaper if you find them on sale at a store, but as PP said, we were able to completely personalize them and I knew we would have enough for all the showers and the wedding.
  • I did this- I found packs of 200 single page (no fold) cards with envelopes at Target for $10. Seemed like a good idea at the time, but the colors were all a little weird (I probably liked half the pack- the rest were completely wonky) and they were no-fold which I worried might seem strange or cheap. But, I bought them, and they do their job, so I've used them for all my shower gifts so far.
