Destination Wedding - ok to ask for informal response on the Save The Date

Recently engaged and decided on date and location, which will require travel and accommodations planning for the majority of guests.  Our wedding is just under a year away, but because it is a destination wedding, during a holiday week, we want to send out Save The Date cards right away so people can plan accordingly.

Would it be appropriate to somehow request for an "indication" of whether they think they will attend or not?  If so, what would be a tactful way to ask?

This will help us better provide information and accomodation options to guests well in advance, and also help us determine if/how we'll be able to stay on budget (we're paying for it ourselves).

We were also thinking about sending out invites slightly earlier than the typical 6 weeks (at 8 wks) and request RSVPs earlier.

Any "destination wedding" brides out there with some advice?
