Will you/did you sell your dress?

I'm having a yard sale tomorrow, and I'm debating selling my dress. It's only a $99 DB gown, and I don't have a lot of sentimental value with it. It's just gonna hang in my closet forever. Thoughts? Price suggestion for it?

  • My sister donated hers.  You get the tax deduction AND you can feel good about it.  Getting $50 for a dress....I don't know.  I think the donation would be better.

  • If you don't have sentimental attachments to it, then I would sell it.  Maybe for $50.  Did you dry clean it?

I haven't decided what I'm doing with mine yet.
  • Mmm maybe start it at $80 and drop it $10 each hour it goes unbought?

I probably won't sel mine, even though I know that's stupid. I love it though.
  • Mine is still hanging in the closet, and part of me wants to save it, part of me thinks it's stupid to save.

    So there it hangs.
  • I was planning on selling my dress originally, but have since changed my mind--I could part with it if I tried!

If you don't have any attachment to it and think you could get some $ out of it, you might as well try to sell it. No one has to know what you paid for it originally, so I'd try selling it for what you paid for it. Or, save it---and have it made into a quilt or something!

  • No, it hasn't been dry cleaned but it's also not dirty. Even for my TTD, I would sit on something so as not to get anything on it. It's a little wrinkled, that's it.

  • I don't think I'll be able to part ways with my dress. I love it too much!

  • I will have no sentimental value attached, so probably... though I won't tell my mother, she thought I was kidding when I said I had no intention of getting it "preserved" lol

  • I donated mine to www.bridesagainstbreastcancer.com

They either sell it at an auction to raise money for patients, or they give it to a woman who has breast cancer and cannot afford a dress on her own.
  • I was thinking about selling my dress after the wedding. I'm saving my very expensive veil for my hypothetical daughters, however the dress is something that I'm sure they will like to pick on their own. I haven't decided for sure, but I'm definitely considering it.

If you truly paid 99 dollars for it. I think you could probably try to get your 99 dollars back. I would think at least $50 would be reasonable and expected for a wedding dress at a garage sale.

  • If my dad does a fancy event for his retirement this fall, I'm wearing my dress with the bolero jacket. So no, I'm keeping mine.

As a note-she got rid of it the Monday that she got back from her DW.  Married on Tuesday, dress out the next Monday.  I said I was going to donate my BM dress, but guess what?  That monstrosity is still hanging in my closet.

Do it and do it soon!!!!

  • Mine just has some really pretty beadwork on it, and I figure that if my hypothetical daughter/niece/fdil wanted to take my dress apart, I'd want them to have it.

I think that my BIL's girlfriend has intentions of using lining from her mom's dress and DH's mom's dress in her dress. You just never know. It's a dress. It doesn't take up that much room. I'll probably end up keeping it.

I'm planning on keeping my dress because I love it and I keep telling myself that some day someone I know will wear the dress. If you're not attached to the dress I would just see if you can sell it. I'd start it at $100 and drop it down as the day goes on.
  • Definitely selling mine. It was a decent chunk of change, and I can't justify something like that hanging out in my closet. I've seen the same dress in different sizes sell within a month on most preowned dress sites for the same price I paid for it (I got it 20% off). I love it, but it should be worn dozens of times, not just once.
  • I like all these ideas! Now I'm feeling indecisive lol.

  • I don't really think there's a market for my dress since it wasn't made by a designer...  I'm planning to have baptismal gowns made from the train whenever we have kids.

If we were in a denomination that did baby-baptisms, that is what I would do, thanks to this post. That's a great idea.
  • I thought about donating it, but i'm not ready to give it up.

  • Thanks, Jess ;)

I'm happy that I'll get some use out of it.  But not too much use, I hope.  If we start having to cut into the actual skirt, it's time to stop ;)

Whit - As for pricing, I'd start at $100.  Then you can get talked down to $75 or $50.

Mine is too dirty to sell as is and I have been too lazy to clean it.  I could take it to a cleaner but I'm sure I'd pay more for the cleaning than I would get selling it.  It has been laying on a bed in our extra bedroom for 6 months now.  I will eventually try to clean it and if I ruin it, I might have it made into a knee length dress that I could wear again (it is ivory so hopefully it wouldn't be too weird to wear it).

  • Yeah, I think I might expat! Thanks for the posts ladies :)

  • I am having the bottom of mine made into a tree skirt for a christmas tree.  I fell in love with a tree skirt at a designer boutique last year.  When I showed it to my MOH she laughed and said "you like it because the beadwork looks like the front of you gown you just bought".  I didn't realize it until she said it.  I didn't buy the tree skirt because it was almost $300.  My gown was only $400 (an $1800 gown on a sample sale) so I don't feel quite so bad about cutting it up.  I have found a seamstress willing to do it for no more money then having it cleaned and preserved.
Christmas is my favorite season because of family and memories so this will just be something extra special we can take out each year.

I also like the idea of saving some fabric for a baptismal gown...
  • I couldn't part with mine, I love it too much, and my mother would be so mad at me. For the girls who plan on getting theirs preserved, ask to see the dress right before they seal it up. Some places will sell your dress and put in a crappy replacement, because by the time you open it, it doesn't matter if its not yours. And some places just mix the dresses up.

  • I sold mine on preownedweddingdresses.com for $225.  I'm so glad it's going to be worn again!  I have absolutely no regrets.  :)
