i am not sure if this will open a can of worms( it seems people either love or hate), but what do you ladies think about it? dh hates it with a passion, i thought it was so amazing in the theatre. however now that i am watching it at home and my art brain isn't shocked at the graphics i am not sure if i really like it....what did you think...it's screaming pocathontas and fern gully a bit to me

Re: avatar

  • i liked the movie.  but, it was way too long.  for me it compared to sex that lasts too long.  good, but you just want it to be over.

  • It was a James Cameron movie. James Cameron movies are big and pretty and dumb, but good entertainment. I enjoyed it when I watched it, but I thought there were things to get annoyed about politically no matter what part of the map you sit on. I also haven't seen it on the small screen, so I'm not sure whether it needs 3D and IMAX to be good.

I will say, though, that I watched Titanic a few months ago, and I can't believe how well that movie has held up. It's remarkably compelling.

I have absolutely zero desire to see it. When a friend asked about it I did the thumbs down with a pbbbbttt noise and left it at that.
  • i am an arttard and love the effects but prety sure i agree with nebb at this point
  • I've owned it since it came out in theaters, thanks to our shady friends, and have had no desire to watch it.

  • FI is at our local IMAX seeing it now (I think it's the final midnight showing or something). I was supposed to go, but I have the beginning of a migraine so I didn't want to see a 3D movie when my head is pounding. About to go to bed.

  • Hah I actually just got done watching it for the first time. I'm not too picky about movies, I'm easily entertained. I thought it was pretty good. The scenery was really pretty (very fern gully ish!) and I liked the story overall. It was a little long, but I was in to it so I wasn't hoping for it to end or anything. I might have if I saw it in the theatre though.

  • I wasn't a huge fan. Visually it was great, but James Cameron can't write dialog or love stories for shiit. It's sort of ironic that he's known for one of the greatest "romantic" movies of all time.

Funnily enough. FI and I saw "How to Tame Your Dragon" in 3D in the same theater we saw Avatar in 3D. We agreed we both liked the dragon movie better. Also, it was half as long as Avatar.

It's sort of a glorified Fern Gully.  I do love that it's human's doing the invading.  It was a nice alternative to other species always invading Earth.

And it fit my theory that just because we haven't seen aliens doesn't mean they don't exist.  We don't have the technology to find them yet, why should they?

And I loved the connection they had to Pandora.  It appealed to my hippie side.

[QUOTE]I love it but yeah, I know it's not going to look good in 2D...even on Blu-Ray. Supposedly they're going to release it in 3D so I'm going to wait to get it till that day.

Personally, I hate 3D movies - so I saw it in 2D, and still thought the graphics were amazing.  (My dad only has 1 eye, so 3D doesn't work for him.  Since I hate 3D, I'm on his movie screening team).

The movie also reminded me a lot of scuba diving, especially the bushes that curl in on themselves - they looked just like Christmas Tree worms (a type of invertebrate that lives in coral, and that is their actual name), they curl into the coral just like the bushes in the movie went into the ground.

So, it also appealed to my diving side.

It is a plot that has been done before, that I typically don't gravitate toward.  I also don't typically gravitate to alien movies.  But this was a slightly different take on it that hit off really well with me in other ways.  Overall, I liked it.  I would probably buy it... but I'm not quite sure.
  • I too just saw this last night and visually it was very cool, but the story line was pretty weak.  I had been avoiding it and got sucked into watching it at a friends house.  I  am probably not a great opinion on this because this is not really my type of movie.  Not bad, but it was not life changing like people claimed.

  • I want to see it. The only reason why I haven't is because it's looong. My attention span is short.
  • I bought the bluray and watched it two or three times already since, so I love it.  But, I'm a sci-fi/fantasy nerd, so there's that part that appealed to me.  And the graphics.  I describe it as Dances with Wolves with blue aliens instead of native americans, and I loved Dances with Wolves too.  I'm not much of a movie snob, so I can't intelligently comment on the plot or dialogue, cause it works for me.
