Text Dating

What in the hell? There has been this commercial airing on my radio stations - you text Guy or Girl to a number, and local singles start texting with you.

Who in their right mind would do this? Why would you want random horny people youve never even seen texting you? I feel the same way about telephone chat lines, who does that? I can imagine back in the day before internet dating sites became popular, it made sense, but it makes no sense for 2010.

Does anyone have insight into this?

Re: Text Dating

  • I saw a true life episode that was about people being addicted to sex. It talked about how the guy used the chat lines to find random people to have sex with. It was actually really sad. I would assume that the texting would be used for the same purpose.
  • Um, yeah this sounds more like "talking off" and less like "dating." I would never start up something via phone unless I was a horny old man, which most of the customers probably are. Even for internet dating, I would at least need a face to go with the communication.

We have those commercials here too for "LiveLinks" or something, with some skank dressed up for the club lounging on her bed on the phone, because she "would rather stay in and talk to you." So cheesy.

"cool......insult my size 2 body or my natural brown hair...or the fact that my parents own a country club, I have no budget for a wedding, and I have horses. I really dont care. Its better then having roots." ~ futurepivko
  • Eww, that just seems so gross to me. Who KNOWS what you would end up getting (person wise and disease wise!)

Plus it is really unsafe to meet up with random strangers like that, especially for something that makes you that physically vulnerable.

We have those, but its called something else. They always roll around on the bed twirling the cord in their fingers (who still has a phone with a cord?!).
  • I think the point is that most of the people that use it really don't care what the people look like or what kind of diseases that have. That why I think it's so sad.
  • Apparently only ladies of the night who like to chat on the phone. I'm surprised they don't have the girls fondling the phone in the commercials. They're kinda phallic-shaped.

  • Cew, also sad is how people use this form of connecting in the LGBT community, because they don't always feel safe trying to find hookups in person (especially transgender individuals). So they find people online who are aware of their orientation or transition status, then meet up in private to have sex. Sometimes they will invite people to their homes, which is very unsafe and also sad that they feel that constricted in being able to find companionship in the outside world.

beatles - I didn't even think of that. That is really sad as well. I hate that it's that dangerous for them.
  • This whole thread is just sad, I dont know why I didnt assume this stuff before.
  • I know, it's like they'd rather risk an attack in private than a hate crime outside. That's why it bugs me when gay, lesbian, and transgender people get stereotyped by "unsafe or provocative" sexual behavior, because a big part of that is how heteronormative our society is. Alright, I'll step off my soapbox.

Also, I tried to quote cew and it took me to the Weddingchannel website. Weird.

  • Scandelous Rach :P

I think the porn/sex chat/live chat have been suffering lately. Now they are running commericals for porn "on demand" and adult channels on channels like Bravo, Spike and I believe I saw one on Discover. And they aren't running them super late either, like, maybe 10pmish.
  • bahaha--not really, of course--but wouldn't that be a fun story for the grandkids!?

  • I always wonder how many of these 'people' on the other end are real singles. I figure that there must be a lot who are just some random fat guy who owns the business and is out to make some money by charging you three dollars per text.
