psa for dog owners

if you crate your dogs, remove their collars before they get in.

h's friend adopted a new puppy a week or 2 ago. this happened the other night:

the puppy was trying to dig out of the crate overnight and she got her collar stuck and, in struggling to free herself, managed to twist it over and over until she ended up strangling herself.

Re: psa for dog owners

  • That's so sad for the puppy.

Luckily, I don't have to worry as I've never crated my dog. That being said, I would hope I'd know to take the collar off if I ever did.

  • Oh, that's awful :(
  • That's so sad :( I'm glad I researched crate training before we adopted Leo. He's so spastic he probably would have done this to himself if we didn't know to take it off.
    Leo says hi. He's...special.

  • Use a breakaway collar!  I have those on my cats in case they jump on something and it gets caught.

    Sad story though...

  • I've heard you should only put the choke collars on when they go outside with a leash. There are lots of instances where they can get it caught indoors. :-(

Oh, I shouldn't have opened this thread. That makes me teary. Something similar happened to my bff's puppy. She had him leashed in the backyard while she went to the store, and somehow he got it wrapped around his neck and died. So scary. I don't have a collar on my cat, but will probably do a memory chip soon.

  • It clearly says on the bottom tray of our crate "remove collar for safety". It's embedded in the plastic material of the crate tray. For this reason exactly.

  • That's so sad. Poor little puppy.

A properly crate trained dog won't be spastically trying to get out of the crate. So, it may be wise to take the collar off a puppy, but my five year old dog sleeps in his crate every night without ever attempting to escape. It's his happy place.
