WARNING- This is a decor post! (kitchen)(livingroom)

So, H wants me to wait until we actually get up there and see stuff in person, but I'm too excited and can't wait.  I am getting ideas for things I like for our new apartment.  Wanting opinions!

Here's our kitchen:

The people who live here now are Chinese and have some uh... interesting Hello Kitty type crap around.  Thankfully, it's all leaving.  But, I'm toying with changing the  light in the kitchen from the red dome ugly thing to:

So, I'm thinking of either this light:
http://www.ikea.com/se/sv/catalog/products/80146249 (yes, it puts daisy shadows on the walls)

or

http://www.ikea.com/se/sv/catalog/products/50070651 (We have the table lamps of this for our bedrooms)

To go along with this table:
http://www.ikea.com/se/sv/catalog/products/S79861355 (pretty set on this)

Chairs, I really want some color to make them stand out, and because I don't want our place to be cold with lots of white and chrome.

http://www.ikea.com/se/sv/catalog/products/S89835318 (in rod/red)

http://www.ikea.com/se/sv/catalog/products/S59864147

None of the actual dining chairs come in colors that I want, these are "workroom" chairs.

Re: WARNING- This is a decor post! (kitchen)(livingroom)

  • I definitely like the second light and the first chair. The natural color of the chair I think will be a nice, relaxing contrast to the white.
  • I love that kitchen, it's so clean and streamlined.

I like the second light and the first chair.
  • I like both lights but definitely the first chair, not the second.

Also, if you posted something after this part - The people who live here now are Chinese and have some uh... interesting Hello Kitty type crap around.  Thankfully, it's all leaving.  But, I'm toying with changing the  light in the kitchen from the red dome ugly thing to:   I can't see it.  Just didn't want to ignore it.

  • But, I'd have it in red because I really want some color.  Like whoa.  lol Still good?
  • Second light and second chair.
  • Yes red would look ultra mod and super chic!

You mean the chairs right?  If so, then yeah I think that would be great.

Weird Dani!  I just noticed that the formatting went all screwy when I added the pics.  I'll fix that.

Light 1 and Chair 2 get my thumbs up. Table does too.
  • Chair #2 looks like an elementary school chair to me.

Chair #2 looks wicked comfy though.
  • I like light 2 and chair 1 in red. If everything is plastic/metal including the chairs that would feel too institutional to me. The wood of the first chairs would soften everything a bit, imo.

  • I like the Maskros pendant light and the Jules chairs in red. I think the spherical shape of the light and the circles in the back of the chairs would creat a circle pattern you could play off of in the kitchen.

Since its SO white in there, you really could go as wild with color as you wanted. Crazy plates and appliances, etc. with red being your base color.

The rule of thumb (sorry, Mandy) is to have three colors, so I'd pick two others that complement red.
  • I was thinking about the institutional feel/school feel that would happen if the plastic chairs were there, but damn, as Nebb said, they look comfy! haha!

I'm a bigger fan of light 1 myself.  i can't believe more people don't like it!

Oh and I think I'll put the table on a rug that we have now, because it will be too small to be in the living room after we move.  It's this:

  • Love the rug, and it totally has the circle thing going too!

Ah ha... I didn't even think about that Georgia! Good call.

I don't normally like yellow, but there's yellow in the rug.  Or, do I choose black because it's so prevalent in the rug?
  • Red and yellow could be cute, but it could also read McDonald's. You'd have to pick a non-neon yellow (a pale butter yellow would be fabulous). I think an eggplant shade of purple would work as well, with black (and grays, which would still basically be three colors) being a good neutral for either combo. My personal tastes would gravitate towards aqua, but if you wanted warmer, yellow or purple would probably be better.

  • K... so, if I do red chairs in the kitchen, do you think I can/should put a red sofa in the living room?  I don't know if H will go for that.

Once again, all their stuff is going to be gone, except for the TV stand, which works because we won't have one once we move.  I'm thinking of putting the TV where the bookshelf is now, and then putting a large sofa under the window.  We have a brown leather love seat from Natuzzi that I think we'll put on the wall where the tv is now, but I want to put this sofa under the window:

http://www.ikea.com/se/sv/catalog/products/S19840648 (we'd get the metal feet.  Would red "work" with the dark brown leather?  We can't afford the matching large sofa for what we have now, and we don't want to get rid of it either)

    or

http://www.ikea.com/se/sv/catalog/products/S29875227 (this one mimics the shape of our current sofa best)

    Coffee table? http://www.ikea.com/se/sv/catalog/products/70103698

    Should I get another rug?

I love aqua, but it's going to be a tough color for me to find methinks.   What about light blue chairs with the table instead of red?  then I could accent with red... or would they blend too well with the white/crome of the table?
  • I would definitely get another rug for the living room since it has hardwood floors.  I think you could do the red couch with the dark brown couch, red and brown are pretty together.  If you did that black rug with the gold circles in the kitchen with red and goldish accents, it would sort of tie into the red and brown in the living room.  You could use a light gold/yellow to sort of tie the rooms together maybe.

Hahaha, I like decorating posts, probably because I'm in the same mode right now so I like looking at stuff.  I've never checked out Ikea before but so many people recommend it, I need to browse through that website more.  The modern-ness (is that a word) of it isn't quite my style but for things like picture frames and rugs and stuff, man you can't hardly beat those prices.

  • Yeah, it's very specific, but it's great for small spaces, and a lot of their shelving, etc isn't as mod. :)
  • I could talk about decorating all day!

Sofa: I like the 2nd one better, but the higher arms of the 1st one may be more comfortable. So that'd probably be a judgement call; they are both great.

Love the coffee table, but you could also do a circular one: http://www.ikea.com/se/sv/catalog/products/50103699

I like the first (Flokati) rug better, but you could also pull in color here:
    http://www.ikea.com/se/sv/catalog/products/10110263

Or the circular shape (this one is 'spensive):
    http://www.ikea.com/se/sv/catalog/products/62757663

*I had to pull up a English to Swedish dictionary to look up the table because IKEA USA didn't have any good ones.
  • Oh I love those two rugs Georgia!  Good call!

  • I'm digging the red as well.  I'm uber jealous of all of your counterspace....puts my tiny Chicago apartment kitchen to shame!!

Look at you all adventurous! :D  You're right.  I like the round table better.  I do LOVE the circular red rug, but, it won't take up much space.  It would essentially be just in front of the sofa.  I think H won't go for a red sofa, so we might do a beige instead, but that might look a little funny with the white table?

Psy, it puts the counter space I currently have much to shame also.  Don't feel bad.

  • I think the beige and white would be fine, since they're both neutral tones. Something like green and orange would be a different story. You can tie everything together with accessories.

Both sofas are also available in white, depending on how advernturous you want to get. As long as you had a no food rule...

I like the striped rug better than the circular red one anyway; especially with such neutral furniture.
