I think I finally finished my invitation wording!

What do you think? Smith and Brown are not our real last names, and some of it is all fake, but it should give you a good idea of the wording. Thanks so much ladies! You all are the best at this.

Katlyn Joan Smith
and
Jordan Gerard Brown
together with their parents
Mr. and Mrs. James Edward Smith
and
Mr. and Mrs. James Gerard Brown Jr.
request the honour of your company
at their marriage
Friday, the fifteenth of October
two thousand ten
at five o'clock in the evening

Kate's Wedding Venue
123 Happy Fun Street
Concord, New Hampshire

Reception immediately following

I've heard evening is 7pm and up, but I've seen 5pm as evening on some invitation websites, and TK. What do you think?

  • Something is off about the first part of it...

Are your parents set on being named on the invitation?

  • I think 5 would be considered afternoon still? I'm not positive.  Otherwise....it looks great :) Congrats!

We actually never asked them, we just assumed they'd want to be named, since both sets of parents are helping us pay for the wedding (and we're paying too).

  • If you aren't getting married in a place of worship, change honour to pleasure.

It's not in a house of worship, but I don't like the way pleasure sounds. I like honour so much better. Is it that big of a deal to use honour, or should I suck it up and change it?

  • I made the suggestion based on the invitation etiquette from Emily Post and Crane. It's up to you to decide what you're going to do.

  • Eh, I think honour is ok.  I wouldn't have thought twice about it to be honest and I'm fairly religious.

  • I feel as though the first part is sort of cluttered. It's a lot of names... Any way to bring the number of names down a bit? Or maybe do "your parents request blah blah you to your fi, son of his parents" (if that makes sense) so that at least your names are at the center of all of that?
  • Oh and I see what mandybear is getting at. It's either "Pleasure of your company" or "honour of your presence." It sounds odd having the two combined, like you didn't really know what you were doing (not a shot at you because you did know what you were doing, just how it comes across to me). I would go with "Pleasure of your company" since it's not at a church.
  • Five o'clock is afternoon

two thousand AND ten.   I know, the grammar and math kills everyone but it's correct etiquette wise
  • Okay, so I guess it is pleasure of your company!

The names do sound a bit weird, and honestly, I don't care if people know that we're all hosting it, as opposed to just our parents hosting it. I just don't like the:

    Mr. and Mrs. James Smith
and Mr. and Mrs. James Brown
invite you to the marriage of their children
    Kate blah blah blah....

The children part really bugs me. I'm not a child (FI and I even have a child of our own) and I don't like that, at all. Alternatives?

And, if it's proper etiquette to do the AND in two thousand AND ten, I'll do that too.

    Here are my suggestions:

    Katlyn Joan Smith
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Edward Smith

    and
    Jordan Gerard Brown
son of Mr. and Mrs. James Gerard Brown Jr.

request the pleasure of your company
as they pledge their love for one another/as they become husband and wife/as they are joined in marriage (or something like that - "at their marriage" doesn't sound right)
    Friday, the fifteenth of October
    Two thousand ten
at five o'clock in the evening

You're welcome. I've taken good notes around here - I can't take credit for most if it. :)

This might be listed on websites as correct etiquette but saying AND would be like having a decimal in there as in 2000.10. To each their own but I am omitting AND from mine. It'll read two thousand ten.
  • Are Smith and Brown your real last names?  If so I wouldn't post those on the internet even though they are fairly common names.
