Don't know how to feel about job situation

So my boss just called me into his office to talk. My employment here was supposed to end next friday when the girl came back from Mat. leave. She called and turned in her resignation. He knows this isn't what I want to do forever and he wants someone that really just wants to be a secretary. So he has asked me to stay on until he finds someone to replace me/the other girl.

On one hand, yay, a job for another week or so.

On the other hand, was I not good enough for him to want to keep me on? And he was just using that as an excuse?

I'm really conflicted feeling here...I could use someone to tell me to buck up.

  • Do you want to be kept on?  Maybe he thinks you'd be offended, somehow, if he offered you the job permanently.
  • It sounds to me like he's just looking out for himself.  He has a pretty good idea that you're going to leave when something better comes along, so he's covering his own butt by finding someone now who he thinks will stay in the position longterm.  I don't think it's a reflection on your performance at all.

  • I think he's worried that since he knows you don't want to do that job forever that you might up and leave at any time when you find a job you DO want to do.

  • No, I don't want to be a receptionist forever, so he's probably right. But I guess it still sucks? I dunno. In a fantasy world, eh would have begged me to stay and I would have gotten to say no lol.

I'm not suggesting that you weren't doing your job well enough or anything, but that sounds like the biggest excuse I've ever heard.  No one <em>really </em>wants to be a secretary.
  • Well, just someone who is content to stay here, that doesnt really want to use their degree (or doesnt even have one maybe)

  • Well, you said "he knows this isn't what I want to do forever." Have you specifically told him that? Maybe if you've had that conversation (or if you've told others in the office), he just assumes you don't want the job forever.

But really... I know from your posts here and other things you've said, that you truly don't want this job forever. It kinda sucks, but maybe take it for what it is - an opportunity to get out of there without having to quit and jeopardize your chances for collecting unemployment while you look for something else.
  • Oh, I won't get unemployment anyway. I'm a temp.

And yeah, he knows this isn't what I want to do. When I was hired, it was with the hope that they could create a marketing position for me. But it was a rough, slow summer so they just don't have the money to do that.

I'm pretty sure that there are in fact people who make careers out of being secretaries and are content. Maybe they'd rather be rockstars or the president, but being a secretary is a perfectly legit career path.

I would look in to that, if I were you. Maybe it's a difference in state laws, but I work for a temporary employment agency and we carry the burden for unemployment for all of our temps.

There's no way! I don't understand why they would give a temp unemployment. It's not like I was laid off, my assignment just ended. I'll look into it, but I'd be shocked.

End of assignment (EOA in our world) = lay off, in the eyes of the UIA. I really think you should be able to. I mean, companies hate paying unemployment but it's there for a reason. If all a company had to do was call every employee a temp - and thus be able to get out of paying unemployment taxes - we would all be temps. Seriously! Call your state's UI office. As long as you're a W2 employee (instead of 1099), I would think you should be able to qualify.
  • Hmm, I have no idea what I was. I need to find that information and try to figure it out!

Are taxes taken out of your paycheck? If they are, you're a W2.

Agree with this.  It's no use for him to keep you on if he knows you aren't going to be satisfied.  Honestly, I would do the same thing.
  • I work for an agency too, and that's a totally legit reason that we get from lots of employers.  I had an employer tell me yesterday that she loved one of my guys that she interviewed, but he has a 4 year degree and she knows he won't be happy there, so she doesn't want to put the money and effort into training him when she knows he will leave.

Also, I think whether you can collect unemployment depends on how long you were working (I'm not 100% sure on this though).  I know we do pay unemployment for our workers and they can apply if it was a strictly temporary position, but something depends on how long you've been working.

  • And yeah, there are plenty of people who are okay being secretaries or assistants.  That's kind of blankety there.
  • How does unemployment work? Do I get a  percentage of what I made, or what?

I meant it light-heartedly.  As I mentioned I'm really just bitter about my job.  Being someone's assistant sucks IMHO, and I think her boss will come to realize that eventually almost anyone will want to leave the job.  And LVB I didn't mean for my comment to be a bad reflection on you, but on your boss.  I just think he's crazy for thinking he's going to find someone that will actually enjoy being a secretary.

  • I agree with PPs that he is probably well aware of the fact that this is not your chosen career path and that it was no reflection on your performance.

I do have a problem with the below...

I'm not suggesting that you weren't doing your job well enough or anything, but that sounds like the biggest excuse I've ever heard.  No one really wants to be a secretary.

I take a little bit of offense at that.  I have made it my career to be a secretary, administrative assistant, executive assistant - whatever title you want to call it for the past 17 years.  I've learned a lot about many different aspects of business which give me a varied resume and really enjoy the work.  It makes me feel really good knowing that my experience allows the person I work for to be as productive as they can be because they don't have to worry about day to day minutiae.

  • It's not that I totally mind what I do, but I worked sooo hard for my degree that I really want to put it to use. But if it comes down to it, of course I'm going to take anything I can get in order to support my family. Anything.

<div>All of your past employers (for the past year, I think?) pay into it, and then when you apply for it, you get money.  But I think with our temps it depends on why they were unemployed in the first place-- if you were laid off from your last job and collecting unemployment before you took the temp job, you can just start claiming again from where you left off, so basically all the temp job does is extend the period of time that you get to collect.</div><div>
</div><div>If you weren't collecting prior to the temp job, I'm not sure how long you have to be working before you're eligible to file, though.  And I'm not 100% sure that this is how it works, that's just the general info that I have.</div>

  • What's your degree in?  Have you considered trying to "hang out a shingle" as the saying goes?

LVB I'm on the Kentucky Office of Employment website right now trying to find you the eligibility requirements. :)

ETA: http://www.oet.ky.gov/des/ui/ui.htm If you want to look too. :)
  • Yeah, I personally really enjoy being an admin.  Mainly because I really enjoy being an individual contributor, and kind of being the glue that helps keep the company running.

LVB, you can get UI as a temp, but some agencies have specific regulations on that (like, you have to call in as available once a week to collect).  But you definately can get it, because the end of a temp job is considered a lay off.

  • I'm straight out of school, so this is my first job, other than summer work at a camp each summer.

I have a communications degree, so no shingle for me .
