This has probably been talked about but is soooo sad.

I have been watching cnn and I can't believe these pics of Haiti.  It makes me feel so lucky for what I have and now my problems seem so small.  I really hope they can get some help down there.

Some of the stuff I was reading about it is crazy. It would be like if the capitol building and the white house and the main financial centers in the US all physically collapsed and a bunch of important people died...it's going to make it very hard to rebuild institutions.

For example, I heard that the archbishop of Haiti was reported dead yesterday. And a bunch of the aid orgs like the red cross are operating out of tents because their headquarters collapsed. I think Dr's without borders reported something like 100 of their workers died?

I heard about the archbishop, too. I guess the Cathedral and some other buildings were damanged.

The State department has some number you can text message to donate $10 to the Red Cross. Any info on that?

  • Last I heard, the death toll was at 500,000. It's incredibly sad. You can also donate by texting to a certian number (I'm looking for it on FB right now, but I'm having trouble locating it) and it'll charge your cell phone bill.

  • Oh, and one of my friends is in the air force and was asked if she wanted to go help with rescue efforts, but she's also in school and starts up next week, so she can't go. She really wanted to, though.

I saw some US military representative on the news last night saying that they are still trying to assess the extent of the damage and the state of things. I thought to myself of the recent Tsunamis, Hurricane Katrina, the earthquake in India last year and just quadrupled the magnitude. It is really unfathomable.

My company just circulated an email that they are making a hefty donation to the Red Cross and will be matching any employee contributions ::thumbs up bosses::

  • I know it is only 10 dollars but I would like to donate something.  I just saw them caring for a 15 day old baby on CNN.  She needed antibiotics but didn't have any.  If anyone gets the text number please post it.  Thanks!

Text HAITI to 90999 and a donation of $10 will automatically be given to the Red Cross and charged on your cell phone bill.

Also, be careful that you donate to legitimate organizations, guys. Some people are sleezy and out to make a buck on other people's misery.

  • Here's another link from the washington post on how to help. It lists about 2 dozen orgs you can donate to:

  • Jamie I donated to this website:

    http://www.doctorswithoutborders.org/donate/haiti-share.cfm

They are legit, you could also donate to the Red Cross.

Exactly, every little bit helps.   I just made this my facebook status:
Rather than posting the color of my underwear to raise awareness for the earthquake victims in Haiti, I clicked on this link http://www.doctorswithoutborders.org/donate/haiti-share.cfm to make a donation.  It's really easy, how about taking the night off from the bar and donating your bar tab? What's awareness without action anyway?

  • Text “HAITI” to "20222" and $10 will be given to the Clinton Foundation's Haiti Relief Fund, charged to your cell phone bill.  The donations are being used immediately to send food, water, and medicine.

  • Lowes Home Improvement donated $1,000,000 yesterday and is taking donations today at most stores. 100% goes to Red Cross. DH covered it this morning and two little boys walked up on his live shot and handed him a bag of change and a rock. :)
  • What makes it so hard for me to watch is to know that they just don't have the infrastructure to get help to those who need it.  A truck full of antibiotics can only help so much if there's no roads between it and those who need help.  So so sad.  Definitely donating to organizaitons that are already there, like the Red Cross and Doctors Without Borders and others, that have an idea of what they're dealing with and how to get the aid to those who need it is a great idea.

The rock made me smile :)
  • I know! His dad said he'd found that rock a while back and has been carrying it with him everywhere he goes. He decided to give it away today. He looked about 3yrs old. SO ADORABLE.
  • I just found out that a boy I went to college with was killed.

  • Thank you Jamie...he was a wonderful guy.
  • It's so sad.  There was a lot of crying and praying going on at work yesterday.

None of Haitians have been in contact with their families.

The co-worker who's daugther had given birth on Monday at the hospital is so bad, she can't even get out of bed.

The bride of the wedding I went to Saturday just has a blank look to her.  She knows her sister is safe because she was flying back from the wedding on the day of the earthquake and could not land because of the earthquake.  Now the sister is stuck in Miami.   They have know idea the status of any of her other family or her new DH's family members.

  • This whole thing is sad, and terrible. I know its silly but I feel bad for not donating more, we dont have a lot of money but anything we have is more than what theyve got so I feel like I should send as much as I can.
  • Our company is taking donations of food and clothes.

  • Nebb, I feel the same way. I donated today, but not as much as I would have donated were we not going out of town this weekend, so I'll probably just make a weekly donation from here on out. I just hope that once everything calms down a bit, people don't forget that this is going to be a very long road for the people of Haiti, and that we should continue to help them for some time to come.
  • It all feels so distant when you hear about it in the news a world away, but when you know someone, can see their face in your mind, and think of them quite literally mixed among the rubble...it's heartbreaking.
