Gahh... Help me please! (ring related)

So. I adore my engagement ring. FI proposed in September, and I've had it on since.  Somehow, since we've gotten engaged, I've managed to gain about 30 lbs (yeah. a lot. I know) and the ring was a tad small to begin with.

We're off to NY for Easter, and I was going to take it to the jeweler's there (FI purchased ring in the US, but we live in Norway) to have it resized.

Yeah.

It's NOT coming off. Like at all. I've tried icing my finger, cooking oil, conditioner, windex, lotion, vaseline, everything. It's not uncomfortable on, since my weird fingers are thinner at the bottom than around the knuckle, but it won't.come.off.

Anyone have any tried and tested secrets?? I don't think a one-week crash diet will result in my finger shrinking enough, and I'm at a loss. While it's not uncomfortable to have the ring on all the time, it freaks me out a little. Halp!

CLIFF NOTES: My e-ring won't come off, and I need to take it off to have it resized. Any advice?

  • Also, are you pulling straight or twisting it side to side to work it up your finger?  Try the latter if you're not already.

  • You could try mineral oil.

Weird, but are you PMSing or have you had a LOT of salt recently? Both can make you retain water.

  • Do you have to take it off right now?  I'd just wait.

If you can't get it off, they can cut it off at the jewelers.
  • I've got nothin', but that sucks.  I'm sorry!

  • That happened to a former coworker of mine. She had to have it cut off at the jewelry store :/ I hope you get it off!

  • Huh.  I'd be freaked if my ring didn't come off!

My best suggestion to get very very cold.  My ring swings wildly around my finger when I'm freezing, but is perfectly happy when I'm warm and comfy.

Maybe run your hand under cold water instead of just sitting it ice?

    I feel really unhelpful.
  • How long have you been continuously messing with it?  Pulling at it and bothering it will make your fingers swell up even more.

For the next few days, I would leave it be, eat as few processed foods as possible, drink a lot of water, limit caffeine and carbonated beverages and alcohol, and limit your sodium.  That will decrease bloat as much as possible.  Then I'd soak your hand in cool (not really cold, just cool) water for about 5 minutes, and use Windex.

If that won't do it, I've got nothing.

  • Oh, and, if you've been trying for a while to get it off, then your finger is going to swell anyway, so you should wait a few hours before trying again.
  • What material is your ring made of? If it's a soft metal like white gold and you're going to get it resized anyway you could just go the jeweler and have them cut it off.

  • Also, have you tried literally putting your finger in ice?

  • I'll ditto J&K's advice.
  • Ditto about getting it cold.  Run it under cold water for a while, and use some dish soap at the same time.  And I can't just pull my rings off, I have to kind of shimmey them by wiggling the top and bottom.

Yes, your finger looks very swollen, probably from messing with it.

Just leave it for now.  All you'll do by continuing to mess with it is make it worse.

  • Ditto J&K, leave it alone for a while and then try again.

    Agree.
  • Your finger looks like it's red and swollen from trying so long.  Give it some time, and some cold water and try again.

    Lube?

Mine comes off better when the diamond is on the side.  I don't know why since it's a perfect circle, it just does.

Exactly. I got my ring stuck once because my fingers were swollen. You need to relax and leave it alone for a few hours. At long as it's not cutting off your circulation or turning purple give the swelling time to go down.

  • If you're still freaking out about it tomorrow, you can maybe stop by a local jeweler and have them cut it off.
  • Thanks everyone. The ring's platinum and I *really* don't want to get it cut off. I think a no salt, high water diet may be in my future for the week ahead, and fingers crossed!!
  • Drink lots of water for the next few days, and then try again when you're hydrated and the swelling has gone down!

    Good luck!!!!!

  • Combined with the other things PPs have mentioned, it might help to raise your hand above your head for a few minutes before trying to take it off.  Good luck!!

  • Wait until first thing in the morning, hold your hand up for a minute or two and then try the windex again. Windex is definitely the best option of the ones you've tried. If you still can't get it off after that take yourself to the jeweler to have it cut off.
  • definitely wait until tomorrow, and then I would try regular dish soap if you havent already tried that. good luck!!
  • Have you tried string?  That works for me.  You wrap it around your finger and slide one end under the ring.  If you gently pull it might be able to help the ring travel along the string and come off.  It will also constrict the finger a bit.  Chances are you will see your finger tip turn a little purple.  Just be quick about it and your circulation will return to normal.  If it doesn't move at all.  You will probably have to get it cut.

    Woah weird TK thread warp...
  • Your finger is swollen like WHOA. Seriously, I have had to cut soooo many rings off customers it is sad. Leave it alone for the next 3 days. Completely. Alone.

Make sure to avoid salt, proessed food and soda. Drink plenty of water. Do not ice it or use oils. Hold a cold bottle of water or iced coffee instead til you are good and cold (5 minutes-ish). Then try Windex. Don't douse your hand in it- just the ring. Wiggle it slightly back and forth while pulling forward. If you can get it onto your knuckle then you can win the battle. If not - go to a jeweler and get it cut off. They have to cut the bottom center of the shank to resize it anyhow. If you do not remove it before your flight the flight can make you swell up as well.

Rings getting stuck happen. Always make sure it is removeable - you shouldn't have it on when cooking (bacteria trap..ew or when cleaning because the chemicals can eat away at the gold over time).
