Should I send a gift?

I've been invited to my cousin's wedding in Seattle, WA.  I'm in VA and for various reasons I am not going to the wedding, mostly financial and fear of flying.   Anyway, my cousin and his fiance have not registered for gifts because they want us to spend the money we would have on gifts in order to pay for our flights and hotels. They are both established doctors and very well off so I would feel silly sending money.  Any suggestions as to what I could send other than just a card?

How about a gift card for a shutterfly book? They could compile all their wedding photos into a wonderful hard cover book when they get them from a photoagrapher or friends.
  • Send a pretty picture frame?

  • Well, is there a family memento that you have, your cousin would like?  OH!! I know!!  Send them a SmartBox!!  http://www.smartbox.com/us/ Depending on what you choose, they can be pretty inexpensive and they're a really fun idea.  We got a couple of them for our wedding.

Amoro, that is a fabulous and ridiculously appropriate gift idea!  I'm sure they would love that!  Do you know how easy they are to redeem?
  • I'd probably send a gift card for a restaurant so they could have a night out at some point, or something else along those lines.  OR, if you know where they are honeymooning, you could arrange for a surprise to be delivered to the room or a dinner one evening.

  • Very easy.  There's a "coupon" type thing in the box, along with all the listings and descriptions of where they can use it.  When they call up for their reservation, they just say they have a smart box, and then read off the code, and I think they have to take the coupon in with them. But very simple.  Probably a lot easier redeeming them in the US where you can speak your native language than in Italy (where ours are for) and knowing what the hell is going on!

Oh wow.  I'd never heard of this.  I'm definitely keeping it in mind for upcoming events where I need to send gifts.  Thanks!

We hadn't heard of them either, but they're pretty popular in Europe, you can just buy them in stores.  A friend of ours got married a couple of months before us in the US, and their registry was exhausted.  Also, because we were still in Europe, we couldn't easily send them cash, so, we sent them one of these!
  • wow that smart box thing looks like a great idea i will have to keep that in mind

  • That SmartBox thing seems really cool.  Appropriate for bridesmaid gifts yes/no? I've been stuck on ideas for that for a long time.
