Thank you for hostess gift?

Hi ladies,

I hosted some friends this weekend, and one of the girls brought me a lovely hostess gift.  It was very sweet and thoughtful of her.  I've never received a hostess gift before (and I certainly wasn't anticipating one for this weekend), so I'm wondering whether I should write her a thank you note?  Or is that like writing a thank you for a thank you?

    I don't think I've ever received a TY note for a hostess gift, and I wouldn't expect one.

    Not necessary. The hostess gift is their "thank you" to you, so thanking them for thanking you seems silly. I mean, I'm sure you said thank you when they handed it to you that's sufficient in this situation.
