Nook or Kindle?

I got some grad money and I am going to buy myself an e-reader now that I will have more time to read that isn't for school.  I know alot of ladies on here have a kindle or nook.  I am looking at the base models, so my question is which one did you get, and why?  TIA!

Re: Nook or Kindle?

  • Kindle!

But I was a big Amazon reader beforehand. I think you can't go wrong with either.
  • the Kindle.  Because H bought it for me as a surprise.  I know he researched all of them, but I don't know why he went with the Kindle over the Nook.  I like it, though.

  • Is the Kindle backlit like a computer screen?  I like my Nook because it's not backlit so it doesn't hurt my eyes to read it.

  • I love my Nook! I bought it about a year ago, and at the time Kindle didn't support many file formats--not sure if it's caught up by now. I also liked the touchscreen, which is easy to use.
  • I love my paper and pages :-)
  • Nook! I have a nook color so it's backlit and I actually use mine like a tablet PC. My friend rooted my nook and now I have all sorts of android apps on there as well as my books. I have serious love for my nook.
  • I cannot say that I hate the Nook since I have the kindle. But I will say my kindle is now a part of my family and most nights sleeps right in between my H and I. I do not think you can go wrong with either but my I loved my kindle since (from what my husband tells me) had more options, I do not only have to buy from amazon, I can buy from anywhere. I think the nook can only go through B&N but I could be wrong about that. Also the kindle has thousand and thousands of free books.
  • The Kindle is not backlit, it's e-ink technology and it's wonderful :)

  • I'm partial to Kindle because that's what I have. I've had it since christmas 2009 so I don't know which version that is.

  • I don't have an actual Kindle, I have the Kindle app on my phone.  I would say the Kindle over the Nook simply for the fact that Kindle has a lot of different apps, like for a phone or computer.  As far as I know Nook doesn't have that.

  • Kindle all the way. The BIG reason people would choose a Nook over a Kindle is the fact that you can borrow library books. That will soon be possible with the Kindle.

  • I love my Kindle, but I have friends with the Nook who love it.

The E-ink is awesome, just like reading real paper.  No, it's not backlight, so if you want to read in the dark you need a book light.  But the e-ink also makes it much easier to read in bright sunlight (at the park, at the beach).

I'm one of those people who is really succeptable to screen-light before bed.  I have trouble falling asleep after using my laptop or watching TV, or any backlit screen...which means I would be unable to read from an iPad before going to bed (well, I could do it, I just wouldn't sleep well).

The nice thing that is common to all e-readers is the portability they allow.  I can take my entire library with me everywhere I go, and it's lightweight and thin enough to carry in my purse.  I always have a list of books waiting for me to read, and those books are much less expensive than if I bought them at the store.  I'm also not wasting paper or the cost/carbon footprint to ship the book to me.

  • I am so excited about the Kindle lendinggggggg!!! Ahhh.

As a headache sufferer anytime I stare at my computer or phone for too long I can tell you with confidence that the Kindle will not cause eye strain or whatever.  I never get headaches from it.

  • I have a Kindle. I love that I can read on my iPhone, iPad, computer or the Kindle and it will sync it to the last page read regardless of which device I used last. It also the best way to read outkindle. The kindle has zero glare.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.

Me too. I believe it's version 2.0. It has the 3G network wireless. (At the time, they didn't offer a non-3G version.)

It's really up to you. Nook supports different file formats, but kindle recently changed it so you can lend out books and library e-book borrowing is something they'll be supporting soon. If you like to highlight and make notes in your books, the kindle is for you, because the process is ridiculously complex on the nook from my experience. I also don't like touch screens. The nook and kindle are both e-ink technology, not back lit, though the nook color is backlit. Good luck!

  • I absolutely <3 my NOOKcolor...you can surf the web and check email and all that great stuff (even these boards!! lol)
  • I prefer my Nook. Then again, I've never had a kindle :P I like that it's not backlit at all and that I get discounts on most of the books that I buy. I also like that you can read for free in Barnes & Noble.

This.  I can read via Kindle or iPad if DH is using the other.

The Kindle is actualyl DH's, and I had been planning on asking for a Nook for my bday next month, but Amazon announced this week that later this year the software will be upgraded so that it's compatible to use with checking out e-books via library.

    <a href="http://community.thenest.com/cs/ks/forums/thread/52230293.aspx">link to article</a>

That was the only reason I was considering Nook.
  • I have the nook.  I like it for the convenience factor, but I don't think it's 100% what they tell you in the store.  They guy told me they have thousands of free books.  If they do, they're pretty much all crap.  Nothing I actually want to read.  And while the books are somewhat discounted, I could probably get real books cheaper using coupons.  They also said you can lend books to your friends.  On further inspection I found out that only certain titles can be lent, not all of them.
  • I have a Kindle.  I was thinking of getting the Nook color, but the Kindle showed up under the Christmas tree.  I love it.
  • I have a Nook and I love it.  My friend also bought a Nook at the same time, and we're constantly lending books to each other.  It uses e-ink, so there's no glare, and it has a touch screen at the bottom.  It comes with games, too.

I also like the ability to read in-store for free.  You get an hour per day to read just about anything you want.  Not every book is offered, but I've  only run into one I couldn't get for free.

I get free library books on it, and I download lots of free books.

It also supports lots of different file formats, and you can get apps for your iPod, iPad, iPhone, Android and PC.  FI has the apps on his phone and work laptop, so he can read, too.

Oh, and you can add an external memory card and listen to music or audio books.

    I love my Nook.
  • I love my Kindle.  It was a gift and I didn't do any comparison shopping.  My brother has a nook and likes it.  My dad looked at both (he was totally jealous during our family vacation last month - LOL) and decided on the Kindle because it was easier for him to figure out how to buy books on Amazon than through B&N.  I have no additional details on his reasonings.  I don't think it's worth paying more for the 3G access because tons of restaurants/shops have wireless access and it's not that difficult to make sure you have sufficient reading material downloaded before you go on a vacation or somewhere you may not have open wi-fi access.  I always have at least 3 or 4 unread books on mine so I even have options as to what I want to read next if I finish something while I'm out and about.
  • There IS a nook app btw. I forget who said they didn't think there was one, but there is, I use it everyday - it's just as good as the kindle app in my experience (had the kindle app before I got my nook).
  • Thanks for all the advice!  I think I am going to go kindle just because it is what all my friends and family have that one, so I guess from a lending stand point that makes the most since.  Have a happy easter!

  • I have a Nook Color and love it.  I found out recently I can now borrow books from my local library.  Bonus.  My daughter loves it as well because some kids books have audio and she can "read" them now too.  It helps when I'm busy and she wants to read.
  • I love love love my kindle, but if you want to use it for school (and download PDFs etc) the Nook may be a better option.  I haven't tried downloading PDF, only amazon books.

Kindle isn't backlit, reads like a book, and is great in sunlight.

I have yet to find all those free books either.

I have a NookColor and FI just got a Kindle for his birthday.  I like my Nook and it goes everywhere with me. The only problem I see is the short battery life.  I have to charge it all the time.
