NWR - Flowers/Plants

Memorial Day is a month or so away.  My mother, myself and my siblings deliver &/or plant single Geraniums at all the family graves.  I personally hate Geraniums!  I want to do a different plant or flower on the graves of the family members that I was closest to (my fav uncle, fav cousin ,etc) but I have no idea what flower/plant to use.

It would need to be something that would require very little care and would stay pretty small. And not be too expensive. Any ideas?  TIA!

BTW- posted here in E since it's the busiest board :)

Re: NWR - Flowers/Plants

  • I don't have much to offer here in the way of flowers, but I would recommend checking and seeing if the cemetery has any rules or restrictions about what you can and cannot plant up there before you do so.  I know the cemetery I work for has very strict rules about decorating the graves/plots, but I'm not sure if other cemeteries are the same (I know one near us allows the planting of trees, which we don't allow).  I would hate to see you go through all the trouble and then have them just yank them up.  :(

  • All of the cemetaries, minus one, will allow us to plant flowers or a flowering plant.  The other you can only place the pot on the ground.

  • I did this a few times with my grandma before she passed away.  The thing is, you have to pick something that will do well in sunshine (assuming the cemetery is not shaded) with or withour water (in case of a drought).  My grandma used geraniums as well because they lasted longer.  If I were you, I'd visit a local nursery and see what they recommend.
  • Maybe crocuses?  They're pretty hardy and will come up every year.
  • Impatients are also pretty and hardy.  I don't blame you.  I don't like geraniums either.  they smell funky.
