I'm an asshole

FI's birthday is tomorrow. And I have gotten him exactly...nothing. I ordered his birthday cake though, so that's good. Would anyone like to help me decide on something I can buy him in a Bestbuy? He travels a lot for work, so I would get him a book reader thingy, except he already has an iPad. So any electronic that would make traveling easier/more entertaining, any electronic in general, or whatever you'd like to suggest. I'm trying to stay away from video games because he'll be on the road for the next six weeks and won't have time to really get into a new one. Also, I could just get him a giftcard and let him pick his own present, but that kind of screams "I FORGOT YOUR BIRTHDAY! I SUCK!" to me.

  • If I had an iPad and travelled a lot, I think I'd love an iTunes gift card.  That way he can buy music/books/tv shows whatever to entertain himself on the plane or at his hotel.  I know gift cards are impersonal, but they're also really practical (for me).

  • An ipod nano?

A new stereo for his car?

Those are both presents I've bought FI, so that's really all I've got.

Yup, that's what I've been singing in my head since I saw my desk calendar with the big circle around FI's birthday. Yup, I've got it marked on a calendar and I still can't remember to shop ahead of time.

  • I got H a cake and nothing else.  The house was his gift.  Oh wait, I did get him something.  A kitten!  I forgot the card though.  We moved into the new house the day after his birthday so it was hectic.

New headphones for said ipad or ipod
    A couple CDs
Itunes gift card to stock up ipod w/movies or music or whatevs
    A carrying case for ipad
Does he have a laptop that he can watch movies on when he travels?  Some DVDs for that.

  • Does he have a GPS?

I travel a lot for work and I've been wanting an extra battery for my phone.  Not exactly thrilling, but useful.

  • Maybe some really nice noise-cancelling headphones that he can use when he watched movies, etc on his iPad. These are nice, especially on planes with noisy babies.

  • I gave J an envelope of cash last year, because for months I'd been saving so he could go get new toolboxes for the garage - he'd been talking about them. Then, out of the blue, he's all about a new cell phone.
So, I told him to do what he wished with the cash (and I didn't dare pick out the toolboxes anyway - he's particular).

I bought him WAY early Teva's this year, but I'm sure I'll get him something else closer to his birthday.

  • Since he travels and appears to like games, get him a PSP. Rick has one and he uses it for all kinds of random things.

  • The headphones are a good idea. He's hard to buy for because when he wants something, he generally goes and gets it. It's rare that he pines after something for more than a week.

  • Nice headphones - I got FI noise-cancelling ones for the gym and he loves them
One of those powermat charger things (do they work for iPads?)
An iPod adapter for the car so he can play it on the radio (I have one, I love it)

And I second the iTunes GC, so he can get stuff for his iPad

  • Ok, I've decided headphones are the wya to go. Anybody got any specific recs on some good ones? I can't bring myself to pay $300 for the Bose ones, but Sony appears to make some decent ones.

  • I am no help at all, I'm just happy H and I never do bday gifts.  Our bdays are 2 weeks apart, so we just do a nice dinner.

Sony is a good brand, I also really liked my Seinheiser headphones, until my cat chewed through the cord.

Sennheiser or Ultimate Ears, depending on whether he likes in-ear or over-ear. My H is a headphone junkie and swears by them.

  • FI and I both have Sennheisers (actually they were a Christmas gift for FI from me one year and I also got myself a pair) and they work wonders on planes. I really doubt that the Bose could sound $200 better.

We're talking about the idea of getting each other trips or overnights in hotels or things like that as presents from now on. We have too much stuff.

Or steak and a BJ. Much cheaper, and just as appreciated.

Well, I hope not.  He better appreciate this trip a little more than a steak dinner and a BJ.    Otherwise, I go alone.
