What Kind of Wine To Bring?

I'm getting together with two girlfriends tonight for dinner. I'm responsible for the wine. I'm not much of a wine drinker and I don't know what they like or what we're having for dinner. What kind of wine should I bring? I'm bringing a bottle of moscato (because I'm familiar with that and know I like it), and....? Help!

Re: What Kind of Wine To Bring?

  • My go-to bringalong wine is Pinot Noir (it's a red). Not too heavy and dry for the sweet wine drinkers and not to sweet for most dry wine drinkers. If you want to go for a white wine, I think Pinot Grigio's tend to fall into those characteristics as well. Ecco Domani has a decent PG.

  • I was going to suggest Moscato. Honestly I would just call them and ask what their favorites are.

Also, I think there are a lot of people that DON'T like Moscato because it's so sweet. I'm not much help though, because I am not a wine expert by any means.

[QUOTE]I really do not like sweet wines. I like cabs. Or malbecs. Mabecs are yummy.

    Mmmm.... Malbec.

    Ditto this.
Either one will go well with food too.

  • I don't have the girl who's hosting dinner's phone number, or I would just text and ask her what kind of wine she likes. I wanted to bring another kind because I know Moscato is too sweet for some people.
  • My go-to wine is Pinot Noir. Right now I like a wine called Concannon. Here it's under $10

  • I like Merlot, Baco Noir or Cab Franc for reds. But not everyone likes Baco Noir, it has a really distinctive flavour.

  • I like whites when its hot out. Marlborough Sauvignon blancs are a crowd pleaser and I drink them a lot in the summer. Kim Crawford and oyster bay are a couple of easy to find labels that I'm pretty sure are available widely. For an easy to find pinot grigio there's kris. Also love vino Verde for something really inexpensive.
  • Mark west is a good pinot noir and its fairly common around here.
  • Go with a generic red and whote. Pinot Grigio is the easiest drinking of the whites and a pinot noir is a safe bet for the red.

I like Mark West. Although the last bottle wasn't very good. I've had enough Mark West to think it was just a fluke. Or at least I hope.

I'm obsessed (and got lots of friends hooked) with Cupcake brand Red Velvet wine. It's SO good, and super smooth. Even friends that aren't very into wine love it.

OH and it's typically on sale at Albertsons or other grocery stores for $8.99/bottle! Score!

  • I'm really digging Rex Goliath Cabernet Sauvignon right now. It's nice and fruity; not overtly tannic, sweet, or dry. Just very well balanced. I've yet to encounter someone who doesn't like it. It goes for around 6 a bottle.

Sauvignon Blanc is my favorite white varietal for crowd-pleasing. Is Marlborough the one with the starfish on the label? If so, I wholeheartedly concur with Slowsky on that rec.
  • If you've got a white, I'd pick a red for the other bottle. Either a Pinto Noir (still a little on the sweeter side for a red) or a merlot or cabernet would be a good standard red to bring.
  • Trader Joe's has an amazing Cabernet Sauvignon. Liberte. It is "pricey", $10, compared to my usual $3-4 Purple Moon but the Liberte is really smooth and delicious.

[QUOTE]I typically like Pinot Noir and Pinot Grigio's when it comes to wines I am not buying at wineries. I have taken vacations to wineries. :) I would stay aways from merlot since it is a peppery wine and not everyone likes pepper. Also, I prefer wines that are not made in a cedar barrel, I prefer ones in the metal barrels. I don't like the cedar flavor that comes from wine that is made in cedar barrels.

I have taken vacations on boats but it doesn't mean I'm a sailor. I think you mean oak barrels. Very frequently, wines aged in stainless steel have oak planks or chips in the barrel, so just because it is aged in stainless steel there may be some oakiness.
