Closet question

Our new place has really limited closet space: both closets are the size of the closet I use now :( So I'm just curious, what is good to fold, and what really needs to be on hangars? If something has wrinkles in it I'm bad about just not wearing it, so at this point, almost everything I own is on hangars, except shorts and pj's, socks and undies. Currently I have a dresser with two deep drawers and one small drawer and and armoire with 3 shelves, two deep drawers, and one small drawer.

Re: Closet question

  • I fold tshirts and most of my pants.

It's usually on a "is it okay to throw in the dryer if it's wrinkled?" rule. If it'll survive the dryer and look wrinkle free, I'll fold it.

Dresses and fancy shirts are the only ones I really hang.

But my wardrobe is....eh. It sucks. I need new clothes. I still have college clothing (tshirts, sweats, etc) and less professional wear.
  • Jeans can be folded and sweaters can be folded too pretty easily.

  • I had that problem in my last house. What I ended up doing was getting a rack from Wal-Mart. It was a little unsightly in the bedroom, but it kept my clothes hung up. The only stuff I keep in drawers are underwear, socks, t shirts, shorts, and pjs.

  • I only put work clothes and stuff that has to be ironed on hangers. Any knit stuff that doesn't wrinkle, and all T-shirts and workout stuff, can be in drawers.

Of course, most of my clothes never make it into my drawers because I suck at putting away clean laundry.

  • I always had to share a closet growing up so our solution, in addition to folding what PP said, was: Seasonal Bins.

We bought the HUGE tupperware bins from Wal Mart and stacked those up in the garage, or the attic, or the 2nd closet (on the floor) and it held the clothes for the season opposite of what you were in.

For example, living in FL, all my coats, scarves, knit hats and MOST long sleeved stuff is in giant bins until December or when the weather starts cooling off.

I know you have limited closet space, but you can usually stack those bins in the corner of the closet and you can still hang stuff up.

Otherwise, hang up things that would normally need ironing.  Fold t-shirts, and things you don't really wear for work or Church or NICE clothes, sweaters fold well, jeans fold well, tank tops and under shirts fold well. Put coats and thick things in the spare closet so they don't take up room in the closet you use every day.

    GL!

  • Do you have an extra room that can be used as a closet?  Buy rolling racks, and box up your out of season clothes.

And betrothed, I'm disgusted with most of the comments that you have posted. I don't think I've ever read such judgmental comments in my life. I'm so lucky that the girls I speak to on theknot are nothing like you...I would've never come on here for ADVICE if I would've encountered a big a bitch as you. I genuinely feel awful for your children or your future children, and I think it would be irresponsible of YOU not to invest in their future therapy sessions starting now. Because trust me when I tell you honey, they're gonna need it. ~jcaruncho2010

  • Thanks for your tips! Yeah, my seasonal stuff is definitely already in bins. I've never had the closet space to have it all out at once. A rack is a good idea, we've got the spare I can put that in. I doubt we will have many overnight guests, so that might be a good place for it. I'll price that at wal-mart. So, sweaters I'm going to fold, jeans and skirts too. I don't think I'll fold my dress pants, they're mostly made of nice material.

  • Actually, most sweaters you should fold anyway, they lose their shape hung up, unless you have those super huge hangers, then you're okay.

  • Oh ok! I've never folded sweaters, but I do notice those little bumps from hangars. Guess I should've been folding them the whole time!

  • Unless you have a double bar in your closet, get those magic hanger things.

  • I almost never iron. FI irons way more than I do and I'll sometimes have him do a skirt for me.

I have a big closet, but it didn't have a big bar. So I bought this, which basically doubled the amount of space I had to hang things:

I double over my pants and hang those and my skirts on the bottom.
