Estranged Father Daughter Dance Song

My dad has not always been there for me.  For the longest time I have been very mad at him for past wrongs. But we now have a friendly relationship since he has turned his life around and I no longer have to depend on him as a father.

Because of this new relationship, I have decided to still include a father and daughter dance in my reception with him.  My mom is giving me away, so this is my nod towards him as still my father and at least my friend.

The trouble is that I cannot find an appropriate song for this dance. Every one I seem to find talks about always being there or something like that and that is not our case. My mom used "My Girl" with her father at her wedding last year so that option is out.

Any suggestions from someone who might can relate on some level?

  • We used What a Wonderful World.  It's classic (and short)

  • "Sunshine" by John Denver and "Isn't She Lovely" by Stevie Wonder are nice choices I've seen - I don't think either of them have a lot to do with always being there.
  • I'm in a very similar situation as you (my mom is giving me away also).  I'm using "In My Life" by the Beatles.

I say don't go for anything super sentimental - just pick with something fun.  Twist and Shout, You've Got a Friend in Me, The Twist, The Lion Sleeps Tonight, or some other easily recognizable band's song that strikes your fancy.

The point is - you can just pick a song that you'd like to dance to with your dad.  It needn't represent all of your feelings about him, or his about you.

  • We're using Sweet Pea by Amos Lee.  It's fun, and only 2 minutes.

  • Why don't you let him pick the song? Since this seems to mean more to him than you, that might be a sweet gesture.

Best of luck!  And I applaud you for having your momma walk you down the aisle. Mine is walking me too, and I couldn't be happier.

I am so glad you posted this!  I am in the exact same situation!  Thank you everybody for song suggestions.
  • "Thank Heaven for Little Girls."  It's in a movie sung by a man with a French accent, but I really like Merle Haggard's version TONS better.
