Is this normal?

Ok the facts:  I am 5'7".  The heaviest I've been is 140lbs.  The lightest I've been (in my adult life) is 123lbs (right at my wedding).  Right now I'm about 132lbs and working on getting back into shape.

BUT - certain pairs of pants that I have that I remember wearing without problems at 140lbs are really tight and uncomfortable now at 132lbs.  WTF?  It's like my body shape is changing or something.

Is this something that happens as you approach 30?  I've heard of metabolism slowing down in general, but fat accumulating in different areas?  And why, oh why couldn't the extra weight be going to my boobs?!  Which are holding steady at 34A.  It's bullshit.

Maybe this is just a vent, but has anyone else experienced anything like this without having given birth?

  • What kind of workouts are you doing? Could your thighs just be muscling up? You should get a fabric measuring tape and keeps tabs on yourself that way, it's more accurate :D
  • I haven't been working out that much, though with my new work schedule :(  I did 30DS (what I did before the wedding) maybe once or twice a week for a couple weeks.  And starting last Thursday, I've been doing some hiking and running every day, but I don't think I'm going to see results from that yet.

  • I've noticed that I've started having fat accumulate in different places and things that used to be "go to" shapes of clothing etc, aren't so "go to" anymore. My clothes are just fitting differently.

I hope it's normal b/c it's happening to me too!
  • Yes, its normal. Your body can collect flab in different areas. Also if you have a new job and your habits have changed, this can really change things. Just keep working and you'll be fine :-)
  • Everytime you gain and lose weight you lose it in different places.  Especially as you get older it changes.  I never used to gain weight in my stomach, but not it's the first place I notice when I'm gaining weight.

And I also never gain weight in my boobs either.

  • Yes, it is normal. My ideal weight is 132 and right now I am at 142. I still wear my size 6 pants that I wore when I was 132. The size 8 pants that I had when I weighed 132 are too tight now.

My dr said that your weight shifts and also goes to other places.

  • i had a flat tummy with no real concentration on keeping it so until age 25.

ages 25-28 have been the exact opposite-hard work and a bit too much flab.

strangely though my legs which were alway thick are slimming out.

so yes to your question - at least for me.

  • Ok so it seems like it's normal.  I still say it's bullshit :)

  • I slowly gained weight for about 8 years, but only started noticing my arms getting flabby in the past year. It sucks. :(

I'm thoroughly convinced that if you leave an item of clothing in a drawer for an extended amount of time that it will mysteriously shrink in some way.
  • Yes, I have noticed this as well. I have lost 30 pounds in the last year and I am still wearing the same jeans size. No kidding.
I decided last night that my quads have gotten ginormous. I am pretty sure its because I have recently started distance running training. (Before I ran 3-4 miles max. Now I am running 7 miles for my long runs.)
  • I was told by my trainer that you get the body you were born with before 30 and the body you work at after 30.  Inspiring huh?

I have lost 15 lbs in the last little while and yet clothes that I could fit into before the stress weight gain don't fit the same.  It's annoying...

I'm a little younger than you, but I know my body shape has changed a lot over the last few years. I'm used to gain everything in my stomach, but I've shifted to gaining in my love handles/hips/thighs. I also lose weight from above the waist way faster than below the waist. I've lost a few pounds over the last few months and my tops and dresses fit way better, but my pants and skirts are still tight. So overall yes, I think it's normal.

    Ha, that's Alex's theory as well :)

Yeah, I'm having that issue too. And yes, it is bullshit.
  • NO. YOU ARE NOT NORMAL.

  • I also think that it's true.  I recently lost 8 pounds, which doesn't seem like too much, but it definitely changed my body.  And I lost it in my boobs and upper back, which was very strange for me.  Usually the weight in my legs is the first to go, with my upper body holding on to any lingering flab.

I was just very surprised when I went in for my first fitting and had lost 2 inches in my chest measurement.
  • You're going to ruin your helpful reputation, Fishy.
