"and guest?" on save the dates?

my fiance & i are about ready to send our save the dates! we've always planned on giving everyone a "plus 1" for the wedding even if they aren't in a long-term relationship. but should i actually address the save-the-date envelopes with "and guest?" Or should I save that for the real invitation? It kinda seems too formal to put on just a save-the-date, but then again I don't want people to necessarily think they aren't allowed to invite anyone. thoughts?

  • If it is someone that will have to travel, I would add "and guest".  That way they know when they are looking at airfare and hotels what they will need to book.  For local guests, leave it off.  Then if things change between now and when the invites go out and you need to cut the guest list, you have some wiggle room.

I would invite truly single guests without a plus one for now, only because once they've been invited with a guest, you can't uninvite the guest. Therefore, if your financial situation, date, or venue changes and you can no longer invite extra guests, you can send out the invitations without a plus one.

The exception would be for guests who have to travel, because they may need to make arrangements in advance--let them know that they can bring someone so that person could also start making plans.

  • We also knew that we'd give everyone a +1 and we did adress the save the dates with "and guest".  We figured it would be good for our friend to know early that they don't have to come solo.  It is especially convenient for guest who have to travel.

  • I agree with PPs. If you know the boyfriend/girlfriend of whom you are inviting, use their name. Otherwise, I found people appreciated knowing they could bring a guest as schedules get booked so far in advance nowadays!
