You guys should all read this

Seriously incredible blog post and I agree with all of it.

Re: You guys should all read this

  • ...it's down at the moment.  grrr.
  • I loved that! Espcially #2. I always suspected that was true. At one time maybe because people were always, like, hey, let's immigrate there! But now that there are no World Wars going around Europe, we're not a attractive as we used to be.

  • I can see where he's coming from, though I found his intro about himself a little annoying. He came off a little pompous about just HOW worldly he is. I liked the comment about the litmus test though, haha that is pretty funny.

  • I didn't really get the native american comment though -- did he mean that most of the world thinks that NA's died from disease and not by white settlers?

  • Oh no! That's a bummer. It's an amazing blog post.

    Sorry Musu, I didn't see this. <div>
</div><div>There's actually quite a theory that says European diseases travelled faster than the settlers themselves, and wiped out entire tribes before we even saw them. Many of the early settlements in the US were actually founded on abandoned tribal sites. </div>
  • That was an interesting read.  I was definitely dubious in the beginning with his grand introduction about his travels and exploits, but I agreed with the majority.  The last few points irritated me, however.

  • The Native Americans were in the midst of a massive plague right before the settlers came to North America. Their numbers were way down. We had less to do with it than we have been taught.

  • Loved it, pretty spot on.  I say this as another American that's been living overseas the past 6-7 years.  The only thing I was sort of only half-sold on was the idea of comfort being dangerous.  I don't think the idea of comfort is dangerous in itself, just that most Americans only live under a guise of being comfortable, when really they're just looking for the next thing to satisfy them or focusing on comfort to hide their shortcomings.

Sometimes I consider moving back with hubs, but the horrible healthcare system (hopefully obamacare will fix that) and the every day laziness just gets to me too much to heavily consider it.  Also growing up in the South, everyone is too quick to judge anything different.  Most Americans are so quick to hate on anything different if it differs from their system of beliefs.  I see perfect examples on TK all the time, actually.

Going to Wal-Mart after 3 years of living overseas was a real eye-opener.  It was like all the problems of our society rolled compacted into one space.

But like the guy wrote, I think it will be hard for Americans to not think this guy sounds like a pretentious mofo because most people are blind to and unconsciously perpetuate the stuff he's writing about.
  • What examples do you see on TK, Mizutamba?

Anytime someone from a different culture/country brings up a cash bar,  dollar dance, or stuff like that that doesn't jive with U.S. etiquette.  There are people on E that tolerate it, but you can honestly feel the cultural side-eying in some posts.

Or like the last thread where someone said they side-eye people who take the elevator for less than 3 flights of stairs, and then a bunch of posters immediately cames back with "omg what if they have injuries/are old/etc. ?!?!" which honestly some people might fall into that category, but most of the people the person who posted is judging don't unless her company is an old folk's home or a disabled center let's be real.  It's like how Americans tend to blame not being able to lose weight on medical conditions instead of admit they just don't want to exercise or eat right.  Only a small percent of the population has a medical condition that prevents weight loss.  Americans in general like to cling to some small excuse to escape accountability, even if it doesn't really apply to them.

Mostly just little things, that I rarely ever hear come out of the mouths of people unless they're American.

But like the dude in that article I don't hate the U.S. and I really love the town I grew up in; it's just hard to ignore small things like that.
