Define your style - Poll

I'm online window shopping and I started to wonder about your style

1) How would you define it?

2) Where have you found your favorite pieces?

3) Is there a style you wish you could pull of, but it just doesn't work?

I would probably define my style as a mix of classic and eclectic.  A lot of my clothes are from Banana Republic and Gap (gee I wonder why) but I usually mix the classic pieces with something funky like a big necklace or some boots.

a couple of my favorite pieces are from Macy's (a basic white blouse tunic) and Old Navy...my winter coat.  I have a sundress from BCBG that is about 3 years ago, I love it, but I think last summer was probably its last.

I wish I could pull off more of a rock look, something like LAMB or Forever 21, but I just end up looking ridiculous.  All I can do to "attempt" the look, is I'm pretty good with the liquid eyeliner.

    1) How would you define it? I don't think that I really have a style. I can't put my finger on it.

    2) Where have you found your favorite pieces? I get a lot of my clothes (t-shirts, sweaters, jeans) from American Eagle and Kohl's. I really don't have favorite pieces.

    3) Is there a style you wish you could pull of, but it just doesn't work? The classic look (which to me means pearls, cardigans, and khaki dress pants.)

EDIT - I also have no motivation/energy to wear makeup or any fancy jewelry. I wear diamond studs and the same 2 necklaces. I rarely switch it up.

  • 1. Girly, dressy.
    2. Anthropologie, hands down. And BCBG. and Nordtrom.
    3. I wish I could do the bohemian look better I just don't know how to go about it...

  • 1) How would you define it?
A pretty even mix of classic, eclectic, trend and "rock" pieces.

    2) Where have you found your favorite pieces?

Loads of places, I love rooting through Winners & Stylesense, I can spend hours going through the racks. I'm also big on RW&CO, Jane Norman, Oasis and Max Azria but really, if I see something I like and the quality is good, I could care less where it's from.

    3) Is there a style you wish you could pull of, but it just doesn't work?
"Unstructured". Like those chicks who can get away with throwing their hair in a ponytail, pulling on boyfriend jeans, flip flops and a tank and looking all-star? Yeah, I'm not one of 'em. I guess I'd say no matter what "theme"  I go with on any given day (even more bohemian or rock 'n roll) it tends to be structured and well-presented for it to look good. I just don't have the attitude to go with toss on whatever and walk out the door, so it looks poor on me, though I have the attitude to rock the well-dressed b!tch look like there's no tomorrow ;)

  • I feel like to look good in bohemian style, one must be an Olson twin.

  • I should add that it sucks ass because if I ever need to run out the door at a moment's notice and am not ready, I inevitably look like crap. It's awful.

  • 1) How would you define it? classic. I prefer to wear clothes that last and keep their style. there are some items in my closet that are at least 6 years old (and not jeans or coats). I do try to mix in some cheap (Forever 21, Target) trendy pieces so I don't look dated. and lots of jewelry to spice up a plain old tshirt and jeans.

    2) Where have you found your favorite pieces? tops--Target and Old Navy. jeans--Lucky, Gap. jewelry--Target and Charming Charlie's.

    3) Is there a style you wish you could pull of, but it just doesn't work? bohemian chic/hippie, ala Kate Hudson, Sienna Miller, and this chick in my class who has lived practically every where in the world and draws on many cultures for her clothing.

  • Do you guys have any weird quirks with clothes?  As in, I hardly ever wear pants, I'm almost always in a skirt or dress.

  • 1) How would you define it?
A mix between Twiggy (the style, not the body, ha), Agyness Deyn, and the Gap. Lots of short skirts and tights, bold prints, skinny jeans, boots, long sweaters, scarves.

    2) Where have you found your favorite pieces?
I love the Gap for basics, but most of my stuff is from little shops around Minneapolis and Chicago. I love Kenzie Girl, BCBG, and Marc Jacobs (although I only find his stuff on ebay.. Can't afford it!).

    3) Is there a style you wish you could pull of, but it just doesn't work?
I always wanted to have the style I have now, but I could never pull it off with my long, curly, princess hair. Part of the reason I chopped it.

I used to want to do the punk look so badly, but it just never quite fit. I settled for hipster instead.
  • 1. I think my style is dressy/ feminine

    2. I have a huge love of the designer VOOM, and I have one great dress in particular that I wish could live forever.

    3. I wish I could pull off shabby chic beter, but I just end up looking a mess.

  • Shelly-- Don't you know, I'm an Olson triplet?
I also wish I was better at the whole vintage look. T's sister and my friend always find amaaaing stuff at thrift stores. I always find junk--wtf

I can count on one hand how many times a year I wear flat shoes. I'm a skyscraper heels girl, they're my weakness because I'm practically pint sized.

I also own more jackets (and shoes but we won't go there) than anyone I've ever met. My coat closet is beyond hilarious.

  • Alix, I'm realizing that the whole structured thing escapes me. I feel like it always looked like I was trying too hard, so I just stopped.

Not to be cocky, but I believe I can be the annoying girl in the boyfriend jeans and messy hair :) Perhaps we could combine our powers.

Shelly - The only time you'll see me in a skirt is when I wear my cover-up to the pool. I wear dresses to weddings, but that's about it. I wore 4 dresses last year (b-party, RD, wedding, guest at a wedding.) And that was a special year - normally it's 1-2 dresses a year.

EDIT - I don't wear heels much - I don't need the height and the pain is so not worth it to me. I wear them maybe once or twice a year. Otherwise, it's flats, flip-flops, or flat boots.

  • Poli- I want to see a picture of you with long hair! Also, your style sounds like what I wish mine was.

Shelly- I only wear jeans on the weekend, if I'm not going out. I love, love, love dresses.
I will never wear sweat pants out of the house or shirts with words on them, I always dress up (Nice clothes-not dress and heels) to fly.
  • haha! Alix, I am the opposite, I have my fair share of heels, but I wear ballet flats all the time. I think I have every pair Banana ever sold.  I'm tall, though.
    Photobucket
  • Oh yea, I very, very rarely wear closed toe shoes. I never, ever wear tennis shoes unless I'm working out (so, once a year).
  • Yeah I wish I could be the chick with the run your hands through it hair and boyfriend jeans. Alas, I am not. I only look good when I've put some effort into it, not that I mind it, but some days I wish I could wander out the house in jeans, flip flops and tank tops and have people go "wow she's hawt" but it doesn't work like that ;)

I think I have about twenty pairs of flat shoes (including golf shoes and runners) versus about two hundred and twenty to two hundred and fifty pairs of heels. I have issues. And I don't do kitten heels, they look all wrong on me, so when I say heels, I mean HEELS.

  • I think my summer wardrobe consists of maxi dresses or j. crew knit dresses.  I have 2 pairs of jeans, and I don't wear them often.

In the winter, its usually a tunic and leggings with boots, or a dress with heels or boots.

I wore jeans this past weekend and it felt weird.

Roxy, ask and you shall receive! This is me, circa 2006.

  • Oh wow! Its so curly and pretty! I think the short hair suits you better though...

  • I don't know what my style is now. Back in the say (high school?) I was a combination of bohemian and retro. Mainly good separates but with some funky stuff thrown in - chunky saddle shoes, a jackie o-type dress, a polyester button down, boot cut pants, fun costume jewelery. I can look good when I want to look good and save the sweats for the weekend. Also, I had a strict dress code in high school. Skirts or dresses everyday. And oddly enough, I still like wearing skirts. I guess high school taught me they don't have to be uncomfortable.

I tried to be kind of hipster/mod/rock-n-roll girl a few years back but I couldn't really roll that way.

Now? Well, let's just say that in high school I would never step foot in a Gap out of principle (which became "never set foot in an abercrombie" in college <-- that still holds). And now, most of my wardrobe is Gap and Old Navy. Trying to lean more towards Gap/Banana Republic. A little more grown up and nicer looking. Now I love things like comfy sweaters and cords, and pencil skirts. Also high heeled boots and a nice pair of pumps. And plaid. I used to hate it and now I love it - the right kind. I wish I lived in Scotland and could wear my favorite things all the time!

What do I wish I could pull off? Pencil skirts. That's about it. I have one in my closet waiting for me to loose 15 pounds.

  • Poli- can you come to my house and dress me? I think your style is the one that I can't pull off.

If you need a lesson in pearls, dresses and heels, then I am totally your girl, but if you want me to look effortlessly messy, then I just look like a slob.

Weird quirks- I can wear flip flops or heels. I don't like tennis shoes, deck shoes, or like sperry type shoes. They makes me look weird.

  • You have two pairs of jeans?
Dude, I would die if I only had two to choose from. I'm a clothes hoar I think... Embarassed
    image
  • Poli I wish I had your curly hair. Mine is pin straight naturally and doesn't hold a curl very well without copious teasing and spray cement.

And Msmery, dude get into that pencil skirt! They are one of my favourite articles of clothing ever, and so so so flattering to the legs :)
    image
  • I guess my style would be vintage. I can't name any designer I wear. Not only am I a student, but my options here are Herbergers and JCPenny.
I have lots of antique-store jewlery, and back when I was young and thin I had lots of my great grandmothers cocktail dresses, circa 1930, 1940.
    image
  • If I meet a woman who can find me a pair of heels that I can wear for more than 2 hours without crying, I will give you... Something nice. Cookies?

And mags and roxy, come on over :) I'm in need of a shopping trip.

  • haha, I never wear them! I have a cheapy gap pair that are good for running errands, and I have a pair of citizens that are my dressy/wear with heels type jeans.

I hardly wear either.  In the summer, I throw on the maxi dresses (i can wear them with no bra its so convienent) and in the winter its yoga pants and fleece.
