Program wording-absent groomsman

We just found out that one of our groomsman might not be able to make it to our May 21st wedding, due to military obligations. We still want to have him listed in the program. Would listing him as “Honorary Groomsman due to military duty” make sense? Or does that make him sound deceased?

Any other ideas of how to word it? My wedding-planning stunted brain is not coming up with anything, other then the funny and irreverent, such as “The amazing invisible man” or “Wait, did we loose one? Oh right, Joe Smith~ absent due to the inflexibility of Uncle Sam and Drill” or “Yes, the groom can count, Joe Smith just couldn’t be here due to military duty.”

Re: Program wording-absent groomsman

  • I love the fun ones if that fits your personalities!  I would us!!  Or how about John Smith - He is standing up for us, just in Afganistan!

  • Yeah! If the fun ones go with everything else, that sounds great, but if you do the formal way, it doesn't sound like he's deceased.  Either one sounds fine

  • Congrats on your upcoming wedding! Responding to your question, I might write something like "Groomsman Joe Smith- Currently Serving Our Country" or even "Groomsman Lt. Col. Joe Smith- Military Detail, U.S. Army," where you might include his title or branch. It really depends on how formal your program is already.  The funny ones would be great for a casual wedding, but if it doesn't go with the theme, you may want to avoid it.
