An Intelligent Conversation

That Mr Stack just had with a coworker.

This girl in his office just argued with him that she was going to call in 4 days sick this year, even if she wasn't sick.  Here is her reasoning.

She feels that 4 sick days off equals out to giving her more money then just working and getting a $200 bonus for perect attendance.

She told him he needs to be smarter then a 5th grader.

    That's kind of funny.

I do feel the need to point out that you used the wrong then/than.

"She feels that 4 sick days off equals out to giving her more money then just working and getting a $200 bonus for perect attendance."

    It should be than.

    JSYK. :)

  • Eh. I guess spread over a year, that wouldn't be extremely noticable, but I can't help but think that would reflect poorly on her. If I was Mr. Stack, I'd be giving her the side eye.

Plus, how did she arbitrarily pick four days?

  • I take sick days simply because we have separate banks.  If we had one bank of sick and vaca, I'd probably rarely take sick days.  Or if I could somehow convert unused sick days into vaca days, but I can't do that either.  Use 'em or lose 'em, which is dumb- it just makes me call in instead of taking a pre-planned vacation day.

She claims as long as her sick time is under 40 hours the company won't care if she takes it.

She is one of those people that believes everything she hears and is always coming up with schemes to easily beat the system and get rich, and/or lose weight quick.  She's currently on the Special K diet and bought every Special K product out there because she'll be 6 pounds thinner in 2 weeks.  And, she's ALWAYS broke and facing eviction.

Sounds like her plans are working for her.
  • oh oh! I have a good one to share too!

As I was walking out of the Sherlock Holmes movie, the people behind me were debating what the REAL Sherlock Holmes was like as opposed to the portrayal in the movie. I gave them the benefit of the doubt there were talking about the literary character until they began trying to figure out what year he died. It was horrible.

OMG- you like totally spelled perfect wrong!  who cares!!!!

    ....sarcasm font inserted here...........
  • hehe... H just found out that if he gets sick while on vacation (6 weeks of vacation), he gets to keep those days he's ill and they get to go back into his vacation bank. hehe
  • That's funny Meaghan
  • Stack, you actually spelled perfect wrong and she quoted it... Cool

Anyways, this chick sounds like a winner of the first degree. I hope she loses that six pounds and doesn't gain it back when she starts eating real food again!!1!!!11!!!
  • All of our leave is in the same bank. Last year, I used every last hour by October, so I'm hoping to keep a couple PTO days until Christmas this year. It's always hard in the summer when you have time off and you just want to take it stay home to lay around or go to the pool.
  • My mom always told me that being smart is a curse.  The older I get, the more I agree.
  • To be honest, I would probably take some random sick days.  I'm not knocking her for that, but the fact that she thinks she'll make more money when the $200 is a bonus on top of salary is beyond me.

Yeah, I was wondering how she figured that.  And announcing that she would take random sick days wasn't too brilliant either.

I get 2 sick days a year.  If I don't use them I lose them.  I definitely use them.  However, I don't get any sort of bonus for being in every day.  She's a SMRT one.

  • HAHA Stack, I might.  I just might.  If it was a bit warmer in here I might seriously question it sometimes.  Then again, I'm having a rough day at the office today, so maybe I'm just a bit bitter today.

  • I'm not going to lie, I occationally called in sick (or went home early "sick") when I wasn't really sick.  But I didn't tell everybody about it and plan sh*t out in advance.  What a ruh-tard.

    Just playing devils advocate here...

That $200 bonus is taxed at a straight 48%

    So 4 days vs. $200
    that $50 a day.  $50/8 hours = $6.25 an hour.

So, if she is earning more than $6.25 an hour, and the bonus will net her $104...

I can see wanting to get full pay PLUS time off.

Well, we are switching to a PTO.  It's a voluntary switch, though, and I'm not going to take it.  Although I like the idea, they're ripping us off.  Right now we earn anywhere from 8 to 19 hours a month of sick and vacation (each).  With PTO, we'd only earn from 6 to 12 a month.  It's not beneficial to anyone already working here, but they're going to require it of all new employees.

BUT if she comes to work she earns her regular salary PLUS the $200 bonus. Yeah, if not, she gets 4 days off, but I don't see how she would get straight out more money.

That sucks Kiki. When they switched us over I went from 3 weeks vacation and 1 week sick time to 4 weeks PTO. And now they've cut us down to 3 weeks PTO (10 hours a month instead of 13.34). So at any other company that would be like 2 weeks vacation and 1 week sick time. Why do I still work here again?

  • We get 5 days of sick time and I use every single one of them.  The value of one week of paid time off is substantially higher (in my opinion) than a $200 bonus for not taking any sick days off.  I may not have more money in the bank but I have more balance in the brain.

I miss my two personal days though.  Those were totally my get out of jail free cards.
