Spinoff of labels vs. handwriting on envelopes

I saw this elsewhere, and was wondering what the general concensus was...is it still tacky?

Re: Spinoff of labels vs. handwriting on envelopes

  • I've read that if you don't like your handwriting and can't have a calligrapher do them, then yes, printing in a gray color and tracing is acceptable.

  • I think this would be fine. Though, I think you should not use labels, but rather print directly onto envelopes if you can (this may have been what you were planning, I don't know).

Also, you don't necessarily need to print in gray and then trace over - it would be just as nice looking if you print in a nice calligraphy style font directly onto the envelopes in black ink.
  • Yes, print directly on the envelope, for some reason I thought that's what she was talking about, but maybe I was mistaken. Don't use labels at all. Please do it in light gray though and trace it with a calligraphy pen. You want it to look like it was done by a calligrapher. Just printing on the envelopes in black and being done doesn't usually go over well. Your guests are spending a lot of time and money on you. The least you could do is make it a personal feel and handwrite the invite instead of it looking like a mass production.

  • I personally think this is another one of those things that you're best at judging depending on your guests.  If your family & friends tend to be more traditional - go for tracing.  If they're more modern & couldn't give a hoot then use a label or print on the envelope.

I just sent out my STDs using a decorative label I printed on my computer with this free font: http://www.dafont.com/andes.font?fpp=50 .  I think they look awesome and fit our "Old Hollywood Glamour" theme perfectly.

LOVE Dafont.com...also used this one on our STD's: http://www.dafont.com/nite-club.font?fpp=50 along with the Andes font above.

  • Eh, I used clear labels, no one cared.  This is the one etiquette rule that I never understood, I even did an 'experiment' and asked a few guests (before the wedding, but after invites went out, obviously) what they thought of my 'mad caligraphy skills' and no one even remembered the envelopes.  Really, I think the only thing that's important to hand write are thank you cards.

<div>I would agree usually, but lately I've seen a lot of invites printed with just black that look great because the fonts will be gorgeous and the spacing makes it looks very professional - not like you just ran a bunch of envelopes through your printer. There's a way to make it look just as good as calligraphy - if not mimicking calligraphy.</div>
  • I'm totally agreeing w/ kekr0202 and jemmini6 -

I say heck w/ the 'rules'. I also used labels on my save-the-dates and no one seemed to even notice. Honestly, all of this paper gets tossed as soon as the event is over - unless your relatives saved on. Even then, does anyone REALLY care if you used a label vs. handwritten vs. caligrapher? I'm planning on using pretty labels and - GASP! - a stamp on my RSVP envelopes. Stress free and easy!! The only thing I'll hand write is the thank-yous.

Omegosh, I think I love you.  It's so nice to see another laid back soon-to-be bride with a sense of humor on here.  Sometimes it gets a bit stuffy...

Right back at you, kekr0202! I can't believe how uptight some gals are, but hey, to each her own. I'm glad I'm not the only laid-back one!
