NWR: I'm scared!

I'm getting my wisdom teeth taken out tomorrow morning, and I'm stupidly afraid. All four are impacted like crazy so I need to do this, but I'm worried about the sedation. Last time I was put under I was four, and I stayed asleep for 4 days because the doctor screwed up. I'm a molecular biology major, these things shouldn't scare me!

Does anyone have some words of advice for the post- surgery time or stories to share?

Thanks!

I'm just going to say good luck tomorrow.

I only had top wisdom teeth and they didn't put me out to have them pulled, just severly drugged me up. I was awake and ready to go shortly after they were done stitching me up.

I hope you've got someone that'll be able to take care of you.

Good luck tomorrow. You will be fine.

I only had 2 of mine removed and they were both impacted. Just make sure you have a lot of soft foods in the house as you won't be able to drive with the pain meds. I barely ate and mostly slept for a few days after my surgery.

Edit: I was completely put out with mine. I had a rough time after the surgery as I was in a lot of pain for several days. I think I got a dry socket with one of them.
  • I hope you have a competent anaesthesiologist (sp?) this time. I got 4 taken out when I was 17, but wasn't under full anaesthesia. I was conscious, but in a totally other world. Seriously, I didn't feel it at all. My periodontist told me that when you're not under general anaesthesia, oral surgeons do a cleaner job of it. When you're conscious, they're more conscious of not hurting you.

Gross story ahead, just so you're warned. One of my teeth was growing perpendicular to my gumline, and he had to like, wedge it out and it popped out and went down my throat. I coughed it up. That sucked. But other than that, everything was fine. I didn't get dry sockets.

  • Mine weren't impacted and I still told them to put me way under.  Like triple-bypass surgery under.  Like there was a chance I wouldn't wake up under.  But I did wake up.  And it was fine.  Just have someone to watch you that day and lots of Jello on hand :)  I felt a little sick from the anesthesia and the bloody gauze in my mouth so I only wanted mild things to eat.

I had twillight sedation during the procedure, don't remember a thing.  I only needed Motrin for soreness afterwards.  My dentist was a MF surgeon, though, so I think he was an artist with jaws.

I do know when Lucas got his taken out he said he didn't wake up until he had been back at home for a few hours.

  • Thanks everyone! I'm so blessed that FI can work from home tomorrow so he'll be able to take care of me. I have enough pudding and jello in my house to feed an army of babies.

Ha, "army of babies". The mental image is priceless.

  • I had all 4 of mine taken out when I was 16. TMI alert - all 4 were bony impacted, so they had to chisel them out. I was completely sedated, and was back swimming and running in 2 days. No complications, no big deal. I quuit taking the pain medicine the day after surgery.

    Good luck!
  • I had mine out when I was 15.  I remember counting backwards and then the doctor saying it was all finished.  My oral surgeon was an hour away from my house and I fell asleep in the parking lot and didn't wake up until we got home.  All I did for the first two days was sleep, watch t.v., eat jello and applesauce, and read Harry Potter because the fourth one had just been released.

You'll be fine.  I freaked out beforehand (as I do before any medical procedure), but it was really no big deal.  Just follow their directions and don't drink through a straw, so you don't get dry sockets.

  • I had all four taken out at the same time and it wasn't too bad. The Dr. had me put a tea bag on one of the wounds to stop it from bleeding. I only had to take one pain med so I think you'll be fine =)

  • I had all four taken out (all impacted) under general when I was about 22.  Honestly, I was fine at the end of the day.  Tired from the drugs, but not in too much pain.  The next day was dreadful, but all due to the hangover of anesthesia.  The only pain meds I took was Tylenol.

Don't fear it - it will go just fine.  Promise!

Get yogurt, popsicles, and ice cream.  You can't eat too much other than for the first days.  Get some soft food with protein, too - all that sweet stuff is yicky.  I ate baby food... :-)
  • I am a big baby about teeth (I wish I could get put under to have my teeth cleaned, really can't stand it), and I never had surgery before my wisdom teeth extraction (unless you count when I had some baby teeth pulled out and insisted on being put under for that).

I was really sick with a bad cold/larangitis when I was supposed to have them out, maybe on a Monday, so I had to put it off.  By that Thursday, I was doing much better and had them out, 2 grown in, 1 impacted.  They put me under and gave me an IV antiinflammatory, so I was barely even puffy afterwards.

I took some Motrin, but I didn't need narcotic pain meds (and I've thrown up tylenol with codeine before, so I didn't want to risk puking while I had the stiches in my mouth).  By Saturday I was cleared by the surgeon and eating pancakes (no nuts).

You'll be good.  You have soft, yummy foods and someone to take care of you.  Time to catch up on some tv shows.
  • I had all 4 of mine removed, at once, when I was 17. They were all impacted like crazy too. I know people have issues with the sedation, but I was fine. I was tired and groggy for a few hours, but then I was fine. I really only had a problem with the facial bruising after. My entire jaw and cheeks turned yellow and black :(  Good luck and I'm sure you'll do great!
  • I was also put totally under. I guess I just said some really weird things ( I was really into ER at the time and was apparently using a bunch of doctor lingo that made no sense :) )
  • my oral surgeon asked me to be his poster child for wisdom teeth removal...

    all 4 impacted....put completely under....
woke up ready to go (though he made me lay in recovery for a bit)
I left the office and smoked a cigarette
got home and ate french toast
at lunch i had microwaved frozen pizza
and by dinner i felt normal and could eat normal food

other than swelling (i looked like a chipmunk for a day or two) i was fine.
  • I had my 2 bottom teeth taken out, which were impacted. The roots on one were 15 mm long (and there were 3 roots). The dentist broke his instrument trying to extract it. BUT they gave me vicodin and I was pretty good after the weekend (I scheduled it for Friday). I spent a week or two eating softer foods, but no major problems at all. I drank fruit smoothies (no straws) for breakfast every day that week, and sometimes lunch.

  • I had all 4 taken out, and I was only given novocaine.  I had about 10 shots of it and couldn't feel a think, but I was fully aware of everything going on.  2 were impacted, and one was growing perpindicular to the rest of my teeth, and it was fine.  I had no stitches, and didn't have any pain meds.  I had no problems at all, and not even any swelling.

Whatever you do, don't drink out of straw for at least a week.  I was paranoid about dry sockets so I didn't use one for at least a month.  And everywhere I went I carried a water bottle of salt water.   I would rinse after everything I ate and drank, and even at the bar I would rinse after every like 2 drinks.

Oh, and my favorite thing I ate after was an Arby's Jamocha shake, with a spoon.  Send your FI for a milkshake for you.

  • I also had all four removed at once. They were impacted, and I was put under for removal. I was 21 or 22 at the time. All I remember is waking up crying (to the point that they went to get my mom). I also got Vicodin, which was nice.

Pick up any other soft foods that appeal to you. I had Ensure, mashed potatoes, baby food squash, and who knows what else on hand. My only problem was trying to go back to solid food a little too soon. Nothing bad happened--I just freaked myself out.
  • I had mine (I only had one, impacted) taken out last June. The surgery went well; they're serious when they say you won't remember a thing. I insisted on taking my big a$% tooth home with me. Aaanyway, I'm not sure if I reacted poorly to the Vicodin or the anesthesia, but 24 hrs after the surgey I threw up all day, once every half hour, regardless of the fact that there was nothing in my stomach. It was pretty sucky but I stopped taking the Vicodin immediately on doc's orders and was fine after that. You will be, too! Just know that they give you the doc's phone # for a reason; it's okay to call. Good luck!
  • I had all four, impacted wisdom teeth taken out when I was in high school.  It's really not that bad.  The 1st couple of days the only issue is the tastes--it's awful but it's not necessarily painful.
The only part that really sucked is they put you "half under"--I'm not sure the term, you aren't aware what's going on but you're not fully under anesthesia.  It's common to talk while you under like this and I did--I was going through a lot of stress and have no idea what I said but from the doctor/nurses' reactions when I came to it must've been embarrassing.

  • I had three of mine taken out in high school. Like DNB, all I got was novacaine, so I was comlpetely aware of everything going on, however, my dentist chose to do them all separately. By the time I healed from one, it was time to get another done. I didn't take any pain medication or anything, and I was back at school the same day each time. If you do take pain meds, don't take anything with aspirin in it.

  • I had all four of mine taken out when I was 21ish and they put me completely under (only time I've ever been put under anesthesia) and I woke up when it was over completely fine.  My fiance (who took me) was actually bummed b/c he was hoping I'd be loopy from it, but no I was fine.  Walked out to the car.  Stopped at a couple stores on the way home.

Just gauze for a couple hours afterward and my cheeks never puffed up at all.  I took some regular old motrin, but I never filled he prescription  they gave me either.  I'm sure you'll be just fine and it's great that your fiance will be home to take care of you too!  :)
