Well, apparently I spent too much money.

Because the fraud department at my bank called me to verify my purchases.

I went a little crazy on the black Monday spending, and my issue is not that they contacted me. I'm glad they did.

My issue is that I wasn't speaking to a person. They asked for my 5 digit billing zip code to verify that I am who I am? Then went through all my purchases and I had to press one if I made the purchase.

I mean...I get that its MY phone number, but it seems like there's a lot more non-public information about me that would better verify my identity, no?

Re: Well, apparently I spent too much money.

  • Did you buy me something nice :)
  • Thank goodness Dwight Schrute didn't answer and tell them that you didn't make all those purchases and you were then stranded in Puerto Rico without a valid CC.

Thanks to your sig I only think of The Office when you post. Your fault, not mine.

  • so true.  What if someone stole your phone and knew you zip code?  Then what?

  • I'm ok with that Vally. It makes me smile.

    Nebbs, you'll LOVE it.

But it wasn't dwight. It was Kevin. ;)

  • EXACTLY LYNDA!

If my card got stolen, it was probably in my purse. Where i keep my phone. Jeepers. And it wasn't a PERSON. It was just a computer! Seems like a shiitty fraud protection plan to me.

  • My bank calls me every time I make a purchase out of state. But it's always a person, which is cool.

Did you buy me crocs for Christmas, Fische?

  • Thank God it's Tuesday. Three hours of office reruns, just for me.

  • 14 years ago my parents lived in Norway.  I lived in their home.  Every now and then I would get a phone call from their credit card company verifing credit card charges through out Europe.  Now their credit card bill went to Norway.  So it stands to reason that them using the card there would be vaild.

They would still call.  I would say that i'm their daughter and yes the charges are vaild, when actually I had know idea what they were buying since I was in DE.  Funny enough they never questioned me, even though I was not on the acccount.  So much for security.

  • Yeah... that's wierd.  I would probably have hung up and called the CC company directly.  I never talk account details with anyone that calls me.  There are too many smart scammers out there.
Holy Crap. We survived the first year!

  • Discover called me this weekend and it was an automated thing just like what you said, but when I didn't recognize a charge (gas stating authorizing way more than we bought in gas), I wound up speaking to a real person.

I had to give the last 4 of my card and the last 4 of my ssn to the automated thing.

I've heard of gas stations doing this a lot, authorizing as much as twice the amount of the gas that was purchased.
    image
  • Well, I knew there was a problem because they wouldn't authorize a purchase I had made last night, and I got an email stating that. So I was kind of expecting a call. But if a dude or dudette is clever enough to get my credit card number, I wouldn't think that my SSN would be that hard either.

Like...ask me my mom's maiden name, or what my passwords are or...where I lived 7 years ago or something.

Yes, but they read it off as a charge for $125, when it was much less.  It doesn't show up online as that much...it's kinda annoying that they can't just charge the actual amount.  What's wrong with that?  Why just gas?  What if every store over charged?

I guess I just don't get it, even though I understand why they do it.

It's an authorized amount not the actual.  If you pay at the pump the credit card you swipe the card first.  It does not know if you car is a little compact or a huge truck.  So the authorize an amount that will fill up the largest car.  Then when the charge goes through it adjusts it to the correct amount.

Annoying?  Yes.  But it keeps people from trying to buy more than their credit card can hold.

edit:  $125 does seem excessive.  Even for St thomas with our $4 per gallon gas

  • Eh, I'm not so bothered by that kind of automation because if like you said the thief had your phone he could have lied to a real person just as easily as he could press the button.  Besides if you were robbed yesterday you would have called the credit card company by now.

  • A couple years back my CC company called me to see if I had purchased $14k in jewelry from Belgium. Um, no. I had been in DC the whole time. That's a lot of money for someone to have to absorb, though...I guess the merchant would have to pay?
  • My problem with the automation is my cell phone was cloned once.  So I had my phone, but someone else had all my information on their phone.   DH was getting pissed because i was not answering the phone.  Come to find out some of the calls were going to the cloned phone. It took a few days and a $6k bill before we found out the cloned phone existed.

  • Fishy, I have PNC bank. They did that to me a few weeks ago. I didn't want to speak to a computer b/c I was sketchy about it. I just pushed 0 till I got a real person. That made me feel way better. Sorry, I'll buy online, but if you have a problem with my purchases, let me talk to a real person.
  • What's weird is that my credit card called me frantically after I bought a laptop at Best Buy. But when I spend 2x as much on the deposit for my reception location... nothing.

about 60% of those people who had Sprint in St Thomas had their phones cloned back in the spring. It was crazy.  Most people I know had $5k+ bills.  the calls went to Cuba, DR, Columbia, etc.

DH's credit card was cloned in SA.  So while we had his card in our possession, someone was using it at a horror house in J'burg.

The same thing has happened to me. I bought a laptop at best buy August 2008 and my credit card company called me that night to double check that it was me doing the spending. Then, in January, I paid for my photographer with my card, but didn't get another phone call. And I'm pretty sure my photographer cost more than my laptop.
