  • How ya doing? I got your card yesterday. What does it say? lol. I see what you mean about it being expensive. I have to take yours to the post office. It will be $1.18 to send. I just pray it gets there in time!

Ha I read that last night. Our UO are never that good and ballsy!

Heeey, why is my husband in your sig picture? :P

  • I couldn't read that, I just got so frustrated. Do people really believe that if there is a God he gets upset at there being a little more love in the world? Even if it's among people who don't believe in him? Sweet buttercream jesus it just doesn't make any sense!
  • You have got to be kidding me.

Manda: LOL @ "sweet buttercream Jesus".

  • Some people believe in Santa just as much as the believe in Jesus. That's their choice to make.

    Uh, wha?  Who?

  • Yet another reason why, while I totally understand faith, I will never get religion.
  • That's kinda unfair. Clearly all Christian's don't think that way. It's like saying you'll never understand dieting because there are Pro-Ana sites.

In my opinion, those Christians are more about the faith, and less about judging others based on Church doctrine, hence my distinction.

  • Well what do you have faith in, without religion? I'm talking if you are a Christian, not those that are agnostic or just have faith in 'something more'. I mean as a Christian, I don't feel you can have 'faith' without the actual religion. I know some will disagree with me though.

  • I know plenty of people who have faith without religion.  That is, they believe in God, but they don't go to church or pray or read the Bible, etc.

I'm just of the opinion that you can believe in God, and live a moral life without feeling like you either have to convert everyone who doesn't, or shun them. I guess what I'm trying to say is, I feel like too much emphasis is put on what you shouldn't do (ie. be gay, be an atheist, that kind of thing), and less on loving your neighbour and all that jazz.

It's just my personal belief, and I'm not trashing anyone who does conform to any particular religion, just stating that I'll never really understand why some people feel it's necessary to discriminate based upon that.

    And yeah, this.
  • My grandfather asks me every year why I celebrate Christmas since I clearly don't believe in God. And every year it's the same answer, to me it's not about religion, it's about being with family and celebrating our time together, since we don't get a lot of it.

But, I think he asks because I'm the only one not baptized and he's trying to guilt me into it or something. Or maybe he really doesn't like me celebrating Christmas, I'm not sure.

Isn't the main difference between Catholicism and Protestantism the understanding that one can believe in Jesus/God without having to attend church (Martin Luther, 95 Theses, Protestant Reformation, printing of Bibles for the masses to read, etc...)

For note: this is based on what I learned of the history of the church, not the actual teachings themselves

ETA: didn't finish my thought - therefore, I could see the difference between someone having faith (faith in God, communicates one on one), but not a religion (community worship).

  • A) I want to wake up Christmas Day and have a sweet buttercream Jesus under my tree.

    B) I googled "God Jul" and it means Merry Christmas, FYI. Once I get more than two cards done, I'll be sending one to Borkland!

    C) I agree that Christian faith is inherently linked to the Christian religion.

    D) Blue Moon Winter Abbey Ale
  • Religion to me means identifying with being Catholic or lutheran or presbyterian or methodist.

Faith = Faith in God, Hay soos, and the holy spook.

    I'm a Christian person, but I don't subscribe to a religion because I can't find one that's non-judgmental enough FOR ME.

That doesn't make me any less of a Christian, ya know?

The common demoninator for all reglions is faith, so I totally agree in being faithful without being religious.

I think we're just debating semantics here. I'm a Christian who believes in the religion of it, but I don't try to convert (unless someone is asking me questions about my faith/religion) nor do I shun my non religious friends. To me, that stuff shouldn't be blamed on religion, but religious FANATICS. In my mind, theres a distinction.

I guess I don't see that they do it because they conform to a religion, but because they're crazy cakes.

  • Well, of course it's semantics.  Religion is a tangible thing, faith is a state of being.
    image
  • There's a difference between the basic tenets of a religion and the different denominations that bend and change those tenets as they see fit.

I'm just doing a crappy job of explaining myself, and I have an admittedly large bias against organized religion of any sort. I'll just stop, lol.
  • I can see both sides here, but I agree with LVB.  Christianity itself is a religion, whether or not you identify with a certain denomination is a whole other issue.  If you're a Christian, you do believe in that religion--the Christian religion.
Not all Christians are judgmental and tell everyone else what they should and shouldn't do.  Those are the nutty ones, and they just happen to be the ones that make the most noise.

As for non-Christians celebrating Christmas, my Jewish boss will be the first to tell you how much he loves Christmas.
