Space Bags

Any one ever used these before?

I just went to my second fitting, and talked to the store owner about possibilities for getting my dress to Vegas. I refuse to check it, so that's not an option--so I'm left with 1. shipping it, or 2. carrying it on. As you can see below--my dress is a bit of a heifer; carrying on as-is might not work.

The store owner thought placing it in a space bag, and sucking the extra air out might be a decent substitute, making it easier to travel with. Would you ever try this?

Re: Space Bags

  • I'm with Brie. Space bags in my world are the bags in the boxes of wine. ;)

  • I use them at home, but I must be doing something wrong because the air always comes back in. I put a comforter in one and got it really flat and then put it in the drawer underneath the bed. When I tried to get it back out months later, it had fully inflated again and the drawer was stuck shut.

But, if its only travel to vegas, i think it would be fine, as long as you can get it pressed when you get there.

  • I should have known I would get a bunch of wine-o responses Kiss

Kiki--I was going to ship it to Debi, and have her steam it...but at the end of the day, I would like to save money where I can. I'll probably ship it home--I don't care if it doesn't make it back on time. But, if it gets lost in the mail? Fuckbeans.

I will definitely have it steamed one way or another....but, space bags seemed like a decent choice.

  • Maybe ask on the DW board, they might have some other ideas.  I think mine is just unpoufy enough that I can squish it into a dress bag and see if the flight attendants will put it in the closet.  I've heard many are cool with that idea.

  • Yeah, that's my fear, too- the getting lost in the mail.  I don't know what I would do.

  • If you are going to have it steamed regardless, then spacebags are the way to go. We used them last year when we went to Switzerland on the HM/family vacation in February. Got ski clothes for 4 people, all of our other clothes, and the shitton of clothes that my sister had ordered, shipped to me, and wanted me to bring to them. All in 4 suitcases, with no weight overages.

<div>This is what I thought also. For a long term solution (i.e. storing my dress), I would never use a space bag. But to get it on a plane for 4 hours? Hmm...sounds about right. </div>

  • Like a pp said, I've had a problem with long term storage and the air coming back in, but for a plane trip I think you'll be fine.  And you're getting steamed anyway, so you're golden.  It's an absolutely beautiful dress, btw, but you know that :)

  • I love space bags, I have a ton of them and they work well. If you can get it steamed after I say go for it.
  • I'm afraid I will go Space Bag crazy---that I will like it so much for my dress, that I will Space Bag everything I own.

  • I would be worried about wrinkles. By the way every time I see one of your posts and I see your dress I get total dress envy... it is absolutely gorgeous. Smile

  • Do they make a space bag jumbo enough for all that dress?

  • I think you might want to flatten the tulle (or whatever is underneath) as much as possible so it doesn't get icky creases and therefore ruined forever.

  • This is late, but I've traveled with space bags before and never had a problem.  The jumbo bag would totally fit your dress, and as long as it's securely zippered, if it lets in air, it will still stay in your suitcase, so that's not a problem.  Like pps said, you'd definitely have to get it steams, but other than that, I think space bags are you best bet.
  • I agree, space bags sound like your best bet.  I don't see a problem with it, your dress is gorgeous by the way!
